  1. Hitman 3 feels like a well-deserved victory lap for IO's series

Feature | Hitman 3 feels like a well-deserved victory lap for IO's series

Hands-on and new footage of Agent 47's farewell tour.

Hitman 3's an odd one, though if you've been along for the ride thus far you'll know to expect as much. Just as Hitman 2 wasn't really a sequel in the traditional video game sense, so too Hitman 3 isn't so much an excuse to fold in big new features and bold new ideas as it is simply a third season of new murderous playpens to participate in, and what amounts to a conclusion to the World of Assassination story which IO Interactive began with 2016's reboot. It feels like something of a victory lap, though there aren't many contemporary series more worthy of their moment of glory than Hitman.

  3. PlayStation in 2021: Sony presses its advantage with a string of big exclusives

Feature | PlayStation in 2021: Sony presses its advantage with a string of big exclusives

God of War, Horizon, Gran Turismo and more look to drive PS5 into new homes all year.

All signs indicate that PlayStation 5 came roaring out of the traps when it went on sale at the end of last year. It was to be expected: the new Sony console had a number of advantages over its Xbox rivals, including momentum from the previous generation, brand loyalty in many markets and a stronger line-up of launch software (which is to say any new exclusive games at all).

  7. Xbox in 2021: a proper launch year awaits

Feature | Xbox in 2021: a proper launch year awaits

The pressure's on Halo Infinite, but true success may lie elsewhere for Microsoft.

There's a kind of vague density to Xbox's year ahead: The Medium is out on January 28th, and then nothing else, out of the whopping 21 console or timed exclusives that I can count, has an actual solid release date. This, of course, is largely the result of the pandemic. Microsoft's original plans for the Series X and S's launch, like everyone's, have been dramatically impacted, and so what we get is lots of games crammed into the broad window of "2021", and lots of uncertainty about when exactly they'll actually arrive, or whether they'll even make it out this year at all.

  9. Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia: a surprise package that's comparable with Series X

Cyberpunk 2077 - one of the very biggest games of 2020 and also one of the most contentious, most notably because on last-gen consoles, the experience is sub-par to the say the least. The next-gen machines fare better, but there's another contender to consider too: Google's Stadia streaming platform. The closer we looked at the Stadia port, the more interesting it became, and in actual fact, there are scenarios that see it deliver improved visuals over the Xbox Series X rendition of the game.

Feature | Wicca is tower defence and the right kind of overwhelming

Now I've played it I want it even more.

It's awful when you have a clown on your team, isn't it? I spent most of this morning fighting alongside two of the worst players I have ever encountered. We were at the bottom of a hill and the horde was descending. Again and again my team-mates proved unable to thin the ranks. The simplest things were beyond them. Again and again we were overwhelmed. And the worst thing? Those other two players were both me.

  26. Genesis Noir and the hidden magic of games that feel like toys

Many games sell themselves with their gameplay, especially if they're not part of established franchises. For video games, more like any other media, including board games, neat categorisation is intensely important - likely to allow for easier marketing. But I discover more and more games that are either very different from whatever genre corset they've been wrangled into, or on the other hand of the spectrum, games with a pitch so good I'm immediately interested even though I've got no idea what the actual experience will turn out to be. Games in both of these categories have one thing in common - they treat play as something experimental, giving us a set of actions we as players may still be unfamiliar with.
