Feature | Wicca is tower defence and the right kind of overwhelming

Now I've played it I want it even more.

It's awful when you have a clown on your team, isn't it? I spent most of this morning fighting alongside two of the worst players I have ever encountered. We were at the bottom of a hill and the horde was descending. Again and again my team-mates proved unable to thin the ranks. The simplest things were beyond them. Again and again we were overwhelmed. And the worst thing? Those other two players were both me.

  13. Genesis Noir and the hidden magic of games that feel like toys

Many games sell themselves with their gameplay, especially if they're not part of established franchises. For video games, more like any other media, including board games, neat categorisation is intensely important - likely to allow for easier marketing. But I discover more and more games that are either very different from whatever genre corset they've been wrangled into, or on the other hand of the spectrum, games with a pitch so good I'm immediately interested even though I've got no idea what the actual experience will turn out to be. Games in both of these categories have one thing in common - they treat play as something experimental, giving us a set of actions we as players may still be unfamiliar with.

  15. Diablo Immortal enters alpha testing - and it seems great

Two years after its unveiling at BlizzCon 2018 met a hostile reaction from fans, Diablo Immortal - the Diablo game that commits the terrible sins of not being Diablo 4, and being a mobile game - has broken a long, cowed silence. After that reception, Blizzard was unlikely to do anything with the game until it had something substantial to show, and so it has proved. At a Zoom briefing with the developers earlier this week, press were told that the game was entering a "very limited" public technical alpha test that has just gone live as you read this. We were also given early access to the alpha, so I've had a chance to try it out, albeit briefly.

  17. Back 4 Blood is everything I'd want from a new Left 4 Dead

Back 4 Blood is everything I'd want from a new Left 4 Dead

Hands-on and gameplay of Turtle Rock's co-op shooter.

There are few finer pleasures than getting to see someone who's really bloody good at something doing what they're really bloody good at, which probably explains the massive smile on my face after ploughing through the first act of Turtle Rock's co-op shooter Back 4 Blood. This, quite simply, is the team behind Left 4 Dead back doing what it does best, and doing it that little bit better too. It's a return to the same concept - you and three friends against seemingly endless hordes of undead - with that same exquisite balance, and that same chunky gunplay. From the blunt borrowings of the title and beyond, it's clear that Back 4 Blood isn't shy of inviting comparisons.

  24. Nintendo in 2021: the possibility of new hardware, and the promise of some blockbuster games

Feature | Nintendo in 2021: the possibility of new hardware, and the promise of some blockbuster games

Switch Pro, Breath of the Wild 2 and so much more should see Nintendo return to the spotlight.

Nintendo's often gone its own way when it comes to doing its business, but as Microsoft and Sony rolled out their latest hardware at the tail-end of 2020 it felt at times as if the company had vanished entirely, a paper-thin release schedule in the all-important months leading up to Christmas making the Switch feel at times like the forgotten console.

  26. Someone should make a game about: Flat Stanley

Imagine going to bed one night only to have a bulletin board fall on you while you slept. Rotten luck, isn't it? Makes you wonder why someone put it there in the first place. But now imagine you had some seriously heavy stuff pinned to that bulletin board, like bricks, and when it landed on you, it flattened you. And I mean literally.
