Feature | The week I went to Art Sqool
Brushing up.
I had a friend once whose father was an artist. He had a gallery for a bit, and had done a stark, mesmerising painting of a tiger that my friend hung in his living room. I close my eyes and I can still see that tiger, the paint piled up thick on the fur, the frightening energy of a beast frozen in movement, one paw raised, eyes fixed on the rest of us, that bland and deadly tiger confidence purring deep inside. "Did your dad like William Blake?" I asked. "YES!" said my friend. "It's that tiger! How did you know?" How could you not know? That's art I guess.

You've probably seen some of the early-game Easter eggs in Assassin's Creed Valhalla by now: most notably the Harry Potter house in Lunden, and the tribute to Keith Flint and The Prodigy in Essex. But later in the game you may well stumble across a Lord of the Rings reference - and it's an Easter egg with a surprising amount of depth.

Digital Foundry | Capcom fixes Devil May Cry 5's 120Hz support for PlayStation 5
Downscaling issues for HDMI 2.0 TVs resolved.
Capcom has issued a patch for Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, addressing problematic support for 120Hz unique to the PlayStation 5 version of the game - as reported in prior Digital Foundry coverage. The issue in a nutshell is this: if your TV supports 120Hz, the PS5 version of the game hard-set the console to run at that refresh rate - even if you weren't using the 120H frame-rate mode. This presented several problems, the most notable being that many 4K TVs only support 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p, meaning that DMC5's 4K-specific modes would produce a downscaled output.

Review | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - solid action with the potential for greatness
Somewhere in the 80s.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the latest in Activision's annual first-person shooter series, is a solid effort. Playing through its campaign, multiplayer and zombies modes - Call of Duty's golden triangle - there is a lot to like. And I do believe Black Ops Cold War is probably the best game it has any right to be under the circumstances - circumstances that were troubled even before the pandemic forced the developers at Raven and Treyarch and the enormous quality assurance effort that goes into a Call of Duty to switch to work from home. Like a Black Ops operation behind enemy lines, Cold War is something of a miraculous rescue job, the result of what I have no doubt was a crushing effort to meet Activision's launch deadline. That there is a solid game to play at all is a fantastic achievement. But, every now and then, you can really tell Black Ops Cold War wasn't the smoothest op ever.

Feature | XIII's remake proves the original is sometimes the better option
Count me out.
Just because a remake falls short doesn't mean we should forget what made the original so good. It's very strange to be a fan of an old game that's been most ignored in years gone by. Ubisoft's XIII did receive some good reviews though - the first one I remembered reading way back in 2003 was in a copy of Games Master, which gave it 94% if memory's serving me correctly.

Recommended | Tetris Effect: Connected review - pure multiplayer joy
Ultimatris?
Tetris is the final boss of a lot of video game consoles. For years I kept my NES around, partly, sure, because I think it is uncommonly nice to look at, but mostly because it meant Tetris on the TV. Equally, I reckon there are a lot of Game Boys out there that only play Tetris these days; I have at least two in my house somewhere. After that it starts to get slightly creepy: as the years have passed, my DS is largely still active because of Tetris DS, a Nintendo-themed blow-out marked by scrappy imagination. And if we allow Lumines into the fold, then jeepers: the PSP is never without the Lumines UMD, and my Vita is basically a beautiful machine for playing Electronic Symphony, a game that had the audacity to change the way the fuse block worked - and I loved it for that.
