  1. F1 24 is slick and polished on all platforms - but feels like more of the same

Digital Foundry | F1 24 is slick and polished on all platforms - but feels like more of the same

Technical innovation is more limited in this year's series entry.

Having a new F1 game release annually creates a real challenge to innovate - to truly rework its visuals and features - and so with F1 24 we have a more iterative entry this time around. With that being said, there are key upgrades. In particular F1 24 brings entirely reworked tracks, with fan favourites like Silverstone and Circuit de Spa - and more - getting major overhauls compared to F1 23. Equally, the drivers get a facelift. All 20 official F1 drivers are re-scanned in to create a more up-to-date likeness, with improved hair rendering to boot. At its core, developer Codemasters continues to use its EGO engine here and who could blame them - it's a proven, dependable foundation, a technology that's served the team well. It's scalable. It's fully cross-gen, and on PC and newer consoles it's capable of ray tracing. Fundamentally the question has to be raised though: are we getting a next generation F1 experience out of this engine? Is it a radical difference from last year's effort?

  4. Ian Higton dressed as an axe weilding warrior stands in the foreground of a snowy landscape. A gigantic, seal-faced Behemoth looms behind him.

VR Corner | Skydance's Behemoth could be the colossus Playstation VR2 needs right now

Watch 15 minutes of brand new PS VR2 gameplay!

Forget Elden Ring DLC, the only thing I'm excited about this week is my hands-on with the PlayStation VR2 version of Skydance's Behemoth. OK, that's a lie, I am still excited about Shadow of the Erdtree, but playing Behemoth on PSVR2 was the first time that I'd felt truly thrilled by an experience on Sony's headset in what feels like an age.

  9. A toy train sits next to a toy pipe organ in Oddada, with a purple character with large eyes in the bottom corner for Eurogamer's Wishlisted feature series.

I have something of a love-hate relationship with games that are also toys. I'm talking about games like Townscaper, The Ramp, Summerhouse and even Tiny Glade - the games that are essentially one endless creative mode where your goal is to simply 'make stuff' to your heart's content. I love what they're about, and I will admire and coo over all the lovely GIFs and clips that folks with far more imagination than I manage to get out of them until the cows come home. But I struggle to get much personal joy from them when there's no overarching objective shaping what I'm meant to be building. It's a chronic case of 'blank page-itis', but not so with the musical toybox delight of Oddada.

  10. Screenshot of The Rogue Prince of Persia trailer showing close up animated Prince character

I love the way this prince runs. I think I could watch it forever. Head thrust forward, whole body pointed forward, hands in fists reaching and punching the air, punching what's coming. He's angled low, like a velociraptor, but he's as sleek and as streamlined as the red sash that billows heroically behind him. Something of a modern sports star in the leggings, with a stripe down the outside of the leg to show you which leg is which as he runs. I can only imagine the fabulous, super-light, super-expensive shoes he's wearing. Not available in the shops yet. A gift from the labs.

  13. A hero casts a huge ball of fire above a boss monster in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

I got a pretty good sense of how things would go down in Shadow of the Erdtree when, mere seconds into my preview session, I found myself ambushed and fighting for my life. My scenic ride through golden fields was interrupted by a hunched monstrosity with dual discs, who pounced on my head and wouldn't give me a second to breathe. A boss fight, you might ask? Nope - this was just a regular enemy. There's a definite sense that even normal enemies in the Land of Shadow hit harder, and are simply more aggressive, than those in the base game. With danger around every corner, you're kept constantly on the defensive, rekindling that same mixture of fear and excitement you likely felt when taking your first steps through The Lands Between.

Wishlisted | Tiny Glade is all about making ruins

    Tumbledown kingdom.

Tiny Glade is a building game, or a building toy. But you don't need to actually build anything to see how magical it all is. Instead, you can just take the cursor and move it through a patch of wild flowers. Don't click. Don't select. Don't release a twisting rattlesnake of stone wall or a squat, pointed tower. Just watch as the cursor itself, as its physical presence in the world, prods the wild flowers around, ruffles them, gently reorients their petals and stems.

  19. An illustration of a doorway inside a house, which is open and shows the rooms beyond all with open doorways, one inside another. In the middle of them all is the shape of a boy, who's clearly been opening them.

In Blue Prince, what lies on the other side of the door is up to you. You might reach for the handle and decide there'll be a kitchen on the other end, or a bedroom or a closet. Whatever you decide, it'll be there - there to step into as if someone just imagined it on a drafting table for you. Thick pen lines frame block-coloured panels, all arranged with a slight jazz-like lilt. There's a slight unevenness to it all, a slight unnerving-ness coming from it. Or perhaps you have grander aspirations. Maybe it's not a kitchen or ordinary kind of room you want, but something outlandish and more befitting the mansion you're in. Maybe it's an observatory with a huge, swivelling telescope in the middle of it, peering out at constellations. Or maybe it's a chapel with rows of wooden pews and sunlight coloured through stained glass windows. Perhaps it's a dark room such as a photographer would have. Whatever you choose, one thing will be true of it: no one else will be there but you. You are alone in this strange mansion that rearranges itself. Everywhere you go, there's stillness and silence, as if the place is caught in time, waiting for someone like you.

  22. An elf, vampire and dwarf walk into a bar in Tavern Talk.

Coffee shop games have left me hot and cold over the last couple of years. Coffee Talk, with its endearing fantasy characters and sumptuous soundtrack, remains the pinnacle of this growing genre for me, with Necrobarista coming a close second, thanks mostly to its striking bookshop setting and considered meditation on death and the afterlife (even if the time you spend as an actual barista is virtually non-existent). Others, though, like Affogato, reduce their respective drinks-making into slightly tedious box-ticking exercises, asking you to do little more than drag pre-prescribed ingredients into a tedious number of machines with little room for showmanship or interpretation.

  24. DF Weekly: Beyond Astro Bot, how can Sony market a PS5 Pro?

Digital Foundry | DF Weekly: Beyond Astro Bot, how can Sony market a PS5 Pro?

Making the case for an enhanced version of the PlayStation 5.

Last week, Sony delivered its latest State of Play and while there were a wealth of new games revealed - many of which look promising - one question remains. How is Sony intending to launch PlayStation 5 Pro if the only key triple-A exclusive launching in the same time period is Astro Bot? Make no mistake - as you'll see in this week's DF Direct Weekly - we see Team Asobi's next offering as one of the highlights of the year, but it's not quite the juggernaut release that's going to sell consoles.
