Digital Foundry | Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition - the first PS5 vs Xbox Series X platform comparison
Which machine is faster? It's complicated.
It's finally happening. Ever since Microsoft and Sony revealed the hardware specifications of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, the question has always been to what extent differences in teraflops, clock speeds and memory bandwidth will actually translate into the gameplay experience and today, we have our first glimpse at how the systems truly compare. Capcom's Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition was initially supplied to us on PlayStation 5 last week, with Xbox Series X code arriving yesterday. There's what looks very much like feature parity across the board here, and a unique set-up that's very friendly for benchmarking - so which machine is faster?

Here's what a console launch looks like in 2020
A chronicle of my adventures at GAME Brighton.
Hand sanitiser, masks, a deserted shopping centre: not things I imagined I would experience at my first in-store console launch. Unless a zombie game was one of the launch titles, perhaps. But this is the reality of the next-gen console launch window in 2020, and with both the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 launches falling under England's current lockdown rules - meaning non-essential retail stores are closed - collecting a console in-person just became a whole lot weirder.

Digital Foundry | The big Xbox Series S interview: why Microsoft made an entry-level next-gen console
"For me, it was an easy decision - let's go do this."
We knew it was in development, we even got to see it during our visit to the Microsoft campus back in March - but today, Xbox Series S launches and it's a fascinating product. Targeting an aggressive $299 (£249 in the UK) price-point, the junior next-generation Xbox allows users access to a much cheaper console that still plays the same games as the premium/performance Series X that's $200/£200 more expensive. The story behind the machine is remarkable and illuminates the challenges the platform holders will have in reducing costs over time, as well as suggesting a difficult time ahead in delivering a generational leap in console performance beyond Series X and PS5. I spoke to Xbox system architect Andrew Goossen about Series S in person back in March and in a follow-up call several months later after the system was revealed.

"We refuse to crunch the team" says Apex Legends director
"That's just not something we're willing to do."
Apex Legends has experienced a bit of a PR rollercoaster over the past few weeks: while Season 7's new map, legend and vehicles went down well with players, slow progression in the latest battle pass caused some players to complain about grind - angering much of the community and forcing an emergency change from Respawn. To answer community concerns, several members of the Apex Legends dev team recently held a Reddit Q&A in which they addressed the unpopular battle pass. But the team also touched on another topic: the worrying problem of crunch in the games industry.

Recommended | Bugsnax review - a fascinating spin on creature collecting
Wild life.
Bugsnax is so interesting that I suspect it deserves a pretty short review. The real fun here is discovery and interpretation, two things that both require a little mystery. Really, it would be good for you to stop reading now and go and play it. Go and play Bugsnax. It's not a spoiler to tell you that it's definitely worth your time.

Feature | The Pathless is all about speed and movement
I've been the archer.
There's no map in The Pathless, no waypoint or fast-travel systems that might make navigating its daringly large fantasy forests and steppes a little easier. I didn't miss that stuff. Not even for a second. These things were taken out, apparently, to ground the player in the world, to make them see these rain-darkened trees and murmuring grasslands as places to be understood and learned on foot rather than just empty stuff employed to space out the set-pieces. I can see that for sure. Beneath louring skies and surrounded by the halted spires of old temples, I did start to get my own bearings. But there's something else, too. The Pathless is an absolute hymn to the pleasures of movement and speed. Forget the plot, the task at hand, the ancient legends and the destruction of the world that looms red and malignant on the horizon. These mythical landscapes are always in danger aren't they? But few are as thrilling to get around in as this one.
