  3. Seven hours with Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Amongst scattering foxes and swaying foxgloves, on bracken-covered hills squared off by broken drystone walls, the Ancient Britain of Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a beautiful sight. Its palette is muted compared to the sunnier climes of Odyssey - here, a ruddy, muddy mix of reds and browns, often dimly lit under England's smurring clouds. For six hours I get to explore this world - specifically, Ledecestrescire - Valhalla's second British region after opening in East Anglia.

  7. Raji: An Ancient Epic review - a gorgeous adventure through architecture and myth

It's always nice to meet a tree, but so often with games it's the same tree - or one of a small handful of favoured trees. Sometimes it's the Great Deku Tree, slumbering in some Hyrulian wood. Always a pleasure, Deku Tree! Often it's Yggdrasil, the great tree from Norse mythology. Yggdrasil, so wizened and melancholy. Don't get me wrong. I love these trees. Who doesn't love Yggdrasil? Who doesn't love the Deku Tree. But in Raji: An Ancient Epic, I met a new tree. First time, I'm certain of it.

  11. PlayStation 5 teardown: how Sony balanced build cost with performance

Last week, Sony finally unveiled its teardown of the PlayStation 5 console, fulfilling a promise first made by Mark Cerny over six months ago in his own Road to PS5 presentation. Effectively a basic outline of the make-up of the hardware, we finally got to see the fundamental building blocks of Sony's hulking console, but little was revealed in terms of the philosophy behind the remarkable design. Our take? It's a somewhat more conventional design than Xbox Series X, and the key challenges facing the designers are answered by sheer real estate.

  13. Amnesia: Rebirth is more than a decade of horror gaming refined

Feature | Amnesia: Rebirth is more than a decade of horror gaming refined

Frictional talks its evolving relationship with fear.

Ten years have passed since Frictional Games' seminal horror classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent traumatised the gaming world, and it's been five since the release of its astonishing sci-fi horror Soma; finally, though, the Swedish studio makes its long-awaited return next week, this time revisiting its decade-old franchise with new series entry, Amnesia: Rebirth. Yet while that might initially feel like an unexpected regression, especially after the dazzling freshness of Soma, Frictional sees Rebirth as the latest evolutionary step in the studio's journey - one it's been on since its inception in 2007 - to create a very particular type of horror experience.

  17. Someone should make a game about: Blackwater Dam

Feature | Someone should make a game about: Blackwater Dam

    Good night and good loch.

Take the A82 from Glasgow and drive north for two hours. Turn right at Glencoe, deeper inland, until you come to a huddle of identical white houses on the far end of the loch. This is Kinlochleven. Park by the visitor's centre and take the footpath east (marked West Highland Way), moving against the current of the river. Zip your jacket up! This is Scotland, after all, and the sky will be low, dull, and pregnant with rain. Persevere up the gutted and ill-kept trail, ignoring the mud that sucks hungrily at your boots, until the valley opens up into a bleak expanse of moorland. Feast your eyes on the sight before you. Wedged into the crooked hills, braced grimly against 24,000 million gallons of water, is Blackwater Dam: a two story high wall of pale concrete, smeared all over with slimy green moss.

  21. Yakuza: Like a Dragon on Xbox Series X - how next-gen hardware delivers a cross-gen experience

Digital Foundry | Yakuza: Like a Dragon on Xbox Series X - how next-gen hardware delivers a cross-gen experience

A demanding engine gets resolution and frame-rate upgrades.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon has Sega's much-loved series taking to the new generation in style, an Xbox Series X launch title that offers multiple ways to tap into its power. Yes, much like our recent preview of Dirt 5, it seems Series X's lineup so far has a trend towards giving players more ways to play - and that's no bad thing. Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Like a Dragon - also known as Yakuza 7 in Japan - moves to experimental new ground by replacing the usual 3D brawling mechanics with turn-based RPG battling. It's a time for overhaul, and this is the series' most daring reinvention yet. It also lands on Series X with clear boosts over existing consoles: adding 4K support, offering 60fps, and also hastening its loading times. But does it deliver entirely on all counts? And to what extent is this making the most of Series X for launch?

I don't know why they didn't just call it Mordred. If you're going for a dark Arthurian vibe, why name it after a fluffy Heath Ledger film? Joust kidding. I'm sure there's a good reason. Maybe Heath's handsomeness didn't get as far as Hungary, and so we've got King Arthur: Knight's Tale instead.
