Feature | After RuneScape's controversial 2019, Jagex plots "direct and deliberate" changes for 2020
Yaks, archeology and microtransactions.
RuneScape was the introduction to the world of massively multiplayer online role-playing games for many gamers; where many of us met our first online friends and learnt about that MMORPG levelling grind from hours of fishing. Even if you've never played RuneScape, then you probably had a friend who did, or maybe there's a chance that, like me, you're still playing to this day.

Baldur's Gate 3 mixes Divinity's excess with old school BioWare magic
Life of the party.
It was roundabout the time I restarted the game in fury that I decided I absolutely love Baldur's Gate 3. Larian's take on BioWare's genre-defining Dungeons & Dragons adaptation is every bit as vibrant, engrossing and startling as you'd expect from the minds behind Divinity: Original Sin 2. It's both modern in its dialogue presentation and exquisitely throwback - every blow, conversational ploy or feat of sorcery governed by the fateful rattle of on-screen dice. It's steeped in '90s BioWare HUD trappings but always feels like a Larian joint, with quests and turn-based clashes that reward thinking outside the box to an almost game-breaking degree. It boasts the developer's usual diorama-esque level design plus crisp, colourful writing that channels the immensities of D&D's lore without sinking into impenetrability. The only major problem I have with Baldur's Gate 3, the expected Early Access bugs aside, is that it isn't the full thing. So why did I up and start a new save, a few hours in?

Review | Mafia: Definitive Edition review - a generous remake that still shows some age
An offer you can probably refuse.
Wailing jazz on the radio. Sumptuous, glossy cars on the road. Opportunity in Tommy Angelo's eyes. There are times, in Mafia: Definitive Edition, where you might wonder if the Great Depression was really so bad after all. Such is the luxury and imbalance of Hangar 13's remake, a top-to-bottom effort that is at times gorgeous - to look at, to listen to, to be in, occasionally to play - but more often muddy, never quite knowing what it is, or really getting the more dated of Mafia 2002's ideas out of its own way. The result is a compellingly awkward, sort of doubly-effective flashback to another time.

Star Wars: Squadrons player recreates iconic A-wing crash scene
Just like the simulations.
One of the more memorable moments in Return of the Jedi - or any Star Wars movie, really - is the scene in which rebel pilot Arvel Crynyd rams his A-wing into the command bridge of the Executor, bringing the ship crashing down into the second Death Star. Somehow tragic and remarkably hammy at the same time, it's a moment burned into the memories of Star Wars fans - and now someone has managed to recreate it in Star Wars: Squadrons. Or close enough, at least.

Interview | Fast cars, big bums and the secrets behind one of the best Need for Speed games yet
Criterion on Hot Pursuit Remastered, and where the series goes next.
It's not so much a secret at this point, but at least we now have the finer details: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is coming later this year, with PC, PS4 and Xbox One getting the refreshed title on November 6th while it'll be coming to Nintendo Switch on November 13th. There's a visual overhaul, with 60fps being the target on PC, PS4 and Xbox One while the Switch is looking to hit 30fps, while they'll all benefit from cross-platform multiplayer (a key part of Hot Pursuit's make-up, seeing how it introduced the concept of asynchronous multiplayer to modern games with its Autolog feature).

Recommended | Star Wars: Squadrons review - a scrappy, compelling starfighter that excels in VR
Double A-wing.
If there's one thing I've learned over the last few days, it's this: being a pilot in the Star Wars universe is brutal. I have newfound sympathy for Porkins, the rebel pilot who briefly appeared in A New Hope, who must have entered his cockpit full of adrenaline and aspirations... only to have it all end with a stray laser. This is the reality of flying through the chaos of space battle, and Squadrons wants you to know it.

Feature | Super Mario Bros. 35 is not Battle Royale so much as Mario without the Memory Tax
It's-a who?
It's rare, I suspect, to wake up on your 35th birthday feeling young again - but then, Mario is not your typical fellow. Super Mario Bros. 35 takes its strange lead from Tetris 99: another free download (if you are part of Nintendo's Online thingy) that reinterprets a single-player classic as a massively-multiplayer affair. It's very interesting, though. Tetris 99 pits you against dozens of other Tetris players, all stuffed in their own Celebrity Squares spots on the edges of the screen, and it really feels like a Battle Royale. Mario does a similar trick, with 34 other players, obv, and it doesn't feel like a Battle Royale at all. Not to get too cosmic, but this is a Mario game that drives you inward.
