Here's everything announced in the Nintendo indie showcase

    Grindstone! Hades! Manifold Garden! More!

  6. Someone should make a game about: Orchestras

Do you remember the sound of the PlayStation 3 loading up, the "parrr" of the oboe and the warm rush of strings? It's the sound of an orchestra tuning up, the sound of a performance about to come. The oboe provides the "A" because it's the instrument with the most penetrating sound and apparently with the most reliable pitch. I always liked that sound. I heard it a lot when I was growing up.

  14. To see Microsoft Flight Simulator's London at its best you'll need this DLC

Given that most of you are probably still downloading the sizeable client for Microsoft Flight Simulator, it might seem a bit premature to start talking about expansions - but trust me, one of the first things you should do after getting it all up and running for the first time is head to the marketplace and buy Orbx's London landmarks pack. 16. Noblechairs Hero Black Edition review: are gaming chairs worth it?

Digital Foundry | Noblechairs Hero Black Edition review: are gaming chairs worth it?

    The three-month Digital Foundry review.

Gaming chairs are weird. They're expensive and their racing style frames don't really make sense for computer use, yet they're a permanent backdrop for streamers, tech YouTubers and esports professionals. Part of this is no doubt down to sponsorships - after all, gaming chair companies are common backers of professional gaming tournaments - but there are also a surprising number of people that buy these chairs outright with no intention of becoming Twitch streamers or esports pros. Are they falling for the hype, or are there some legitimate reasons for choosing a gaming chair over an ordinary office alternative? In the latest edition of "Digital Foundry investigates esports tech", we test out one such chair - the £400 Noblechairs Hero Black Edition.

  19. Marvel's Avengers: our first look at the upcoming generational divide?

Digital Foundry | Marvel's Avengers: our first look at the upcoming generational divide?

Challenged on base consoles, great on enhanced - but is the next-gen the place to be?

It's been a long time since we've enjoyed a new game from Crystal Dynamics - Rise of the Tomb Raider shipped in 2015 - but the wait is almost over, and for the last couple of weekends we've had the opportunity to enjoy extended play with the studio's latest work: Marvel's Avengers. Take an enhanced version of the Foundation Engine that powered Lara Croft's adventures, add in some of the most iconic characters from comic book history and then combine both single-player campaign with Destiny-style PVE action and you have a hugely ambitious project from Square-Enix - a game that spans the console generations. It runs well on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, it should scale beautifully to next-gen - but there are clear and obvious challenges for the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  22. The Suicide of Rachel Foster review - a Shining-esque riff on Gone Home that doesn't quite dazzle

It doesn't take much to make a big, old, empty house feel creepy. Indeed, the more actual, overt threat you add to such a setting, the less fear it inspires - better to let your visitor wander undisturbed, drinking in the silence of the hallways and spotting goblin faces in the contours of broken plaster. This is one thing the creators of The Suicide of Rachel Foster grasp well, though their workmanlike blend of Firewatch and Gone Home is ultimately tripped up by a half-baked story.

  28. Microsoft Flight Simulator review - a sim for everyone, and one of the best sims yet

So often, Microsoft Flight Simulator feels like the future. I've been playing daily for pretty much a month now, and I still struggle on occasion to believe it's real; dozens of hours logged in the skies and the sight of the sun dipping over the horizon, some troublesome weather bubbling over a city or the hazy dawn seen from five miles high will still have me catching my breath, fumbling for the capture button or hurriedly getting out my phone to take a picture of the screen. As a technical achievement, what lead developer Asobo has conjured here is remarkable - in a year when we're seeing the introduction of powerful new consoles, I'd be surprised if either can yet produce a spectacle as eye-catching and awe-inspiring as something that can run without much grumbling on an aging and moderately specced PC.
