If you've ever been for a night out in Birmingham, chances are you may well have ended up at Snobs: the place where I would, somehow, find myself every week during my first few months of university. There's now another way to return to the nightclub, as a group of friends recreated the entire thing in Minecraft - and turned it into a fundraising opportunity for NHS charities.

Digital Foundry | Gears Tactics: state-of-the-art tech powers an excellent PC strategy game
Plus: next-gen variable rate shading technology put to the test.
We all love to jump on the hype train for the arrival of a hot new game, but Gears Tactics is a very different animal. Aside from viewing some early trailers, I approached final code with no expectations - I really didn't know what to expect at all. I went into this one almost completely 'unspoiled' then but suffice to say, I'm blown away by the quality of this game: both for its gameplay and technological design.

Recommended | XCOM: Chimera Squad review - a generous and inventive spin on a tactical classic
It's a funny old beast.
Breaching a room is one of those weird things that games turn out to be brilliant at. It's pure tactics - information with stimulating gaps in it. A bunch of bad guys are waiting behind closed doors. You know some things about them but you don't know everything. How are you going to open the doors?

Review | Cloudpunk review - a stylish neo noir adventure that can't quite deliver substance
Daft punk.
It's a bit overwhelming at first. Nivalus - the metropolis stretched out for miles beneath the jets of your HOVA vehicle - is vast and unwelcoming, a disorientating complex of highways and highrises blinking neon under the clouds. The flashing lights of the billboards and advertisements - in select shades of blue, yellow, white, orange - bounce off concrete walls without ever softening the city's razor-sharp edges. There's a nagging sense that wherever you are, someone, somewhere, is watching. Maybe it's the constant stream of anonymous vehicles that chunder past you. Maybe it's the unblinking stare of a million windows looking out at you.

Digital Foundry | DF Retro takes on the epic Final Fantasy 7 saga
Revisiting a JPRG game-changer - and the 23 years of waiting for the remake.
The recent release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the end of a long, long story - and the beginning of a new one. One of the most significant releases in the original PlayStation's library, FF7 redefined the JRPG with its combination of pre-rendered backgrounds, real-time 3D and stunning CG video sequences. Beyond the technology, the world and characters of the game had far more of an impact across the years than any Final Fantasy before or after, leading to numerous ports of the title, off-shoot games and even CG movies. It's a worthy topic for Digital Foundry Retro - but the sheer scale and scope of the project required us to push further than we ever have before.

Feature | Super Mario Maker 2 proves Mario is always better with a world map
The final update brings a rich history into focus.
The Japanese version of Super Mario World for the Super Famicom came in a long yellow box that always felt absolutely stuffed. There was the cartridge in there, and a plastic mount for it I think, but there was also the instruction sheet, which was folded and folded on itself, and when unfolded spread out to a surprising degree. And at the centre of it was a map - a beautiful, detailed map. Here was Super Mario's world, islands, bridges, oceans, rivers. Even now I get a bit emotional thinking about it.

Digital Foundry | Evercade review: the cartridge-based retro handheld that works
A new take on collecting and playing classic games.
On the face of it, Blaze's Evercade joins a long line of emulation-based multi-game handhelds - but this is a system with a twist. It uses actual cartridges, licensed games and bespoke emulation software included with each cartridge. It's a fascinating approach but also a contentious one. Surely it's all too easy simply to dump a complete set of game ROMs onto an SD card and call it day? Clearly that's one way forward, but the curated approach provides some interesting benefits, while behind the scenes emulation choices deliver a level of quality beyond my expectations.

Called "Active Gaming Footwear", these lightweight socks cost $105/£80 and are designed to be used indoors and in esports arenas, providing the comfort, support and grip that professional gamers need to compete at the highest level. This sounds to me like complete bollocks - and that's why I knew I needed to buy them.

Digital Foundry | Eve's crowd-designed display may be the first 1440p 240Hz IPS monitor
Plus: an interview with CEO Konstantinos Karatsevidis.
A few months ago, we reported on the Eve Spectrum: a crowd-designed display based around the same 1ms IPS LG panel as our current top gaming monitor recommendation. Back then, the Finnish start-up behind the monitor was planning to offer a series of improvements to make its offering more unique, including a higher contrast figure, overclocking from 144 to 165Hz and USB-C connectivity - all solid upgrades that meshed well with the unique, fan-influenced design. Now, as the Spectrum goes on pre-order, the company has unveiled that the monitor will actually be available with three different panel choices - including the very first 1440p 240Hz IPS screen to appear at retail.

PUBG adding bots to public matches on console
Miramar image.
It's almost inevitable: once a multiplayer game's been out for some time, veteran players tend to pull ahead to a point where newer players just can't keep up. The situation is the same for PUBG, which has now developed a player base so proficient that new joiners are simply being flattened before they can improve.
