  2. Someone should make a game about: marbled paper

I grew up in the 1980s in Kent, and I swear that there was still a bit of the Victorian era lurking in the streets at that time. The local library was filled with massive oil paintings of cattle, along with stuffed owls resting under bell jars. There was a corner shop that sold truly bizarre boiled sweets by the quarter. There was a second-hand bookstore that was also somebody's home, wonderfully gloomy and silent but for ticking clocks, and every room had stacks of decaying books whose pages had grown thick with the passing of time. Those books! Cloth covers, spines peeling away, and inside them all endpapers of swirled blues and reds and golds: marbled paper.

  8. With its free service, Stadia is starting to make sense

Digital Foundry | With its free service, Stadia is starting to make sense

1080p gaming with a 60fps focus trumps the 4K Pro experience.

Stadia is now free! Or rather, any Google user can now sign up to the service and access the games library without having to subscribe to the Pro tier or purchase the firm's bespoke controller and Chromecast Ultra 4K HDR receiver. It's a good jumping on point for users interested in the service and as we shall discover, accessing Stadia via Chrome browsers, smartphones or tablets can actually offer a key advantage over the Pro-level 4K Chromecast Ultra experience. In returning to Google's cloud service, we also wanted to take the opportunity to go back to Doom Eternal and revisit our latency metrics - a key point of criticism in prior coverage. Was Stadia just having a bad day when we tested it? Was there something wrong with our network? Could we bring latency back down to the impressive level we saw in our Stadia review?

  9. Doom Eternal composer distances himself from soundtrack album

Doom is practically synonymous with pounding metal soundtracks, and the latest title is no exception. Composed by Mick Gordon, who previously wrote the music for Doom (2016), the official soundtrack for Doom Eternal released yesterday: but instead of providing the ultra-high quality listeners wanted, it's come under fire for sounding a bit off - and Gordon has distanced himself from the final mix. Talk about a bad rip followed by tears.

  13. The Flower Collectors review - a simple but full-hearted spin on Rear Window

Rear Window is absolutely perfect video games fodder. Hitchcock's classic, self-contained thriller about a man solving a neighbourhood murder while confined to the four walls of his apartment has been spoofed and refernced so many times in popular culture, in fact, that I'm sort of amazed it hasn't been made into a game already.

  16. Apple Arcade: Beyond Blue gives you the oceans and everything in them

Beyond Blue, which has just washed up on Apple Arcade, drops you right into the cool of the ocean with a diving suit and a couple of voices on the intercom. 19. In Theory: Which PS4 games could benefit most from PlayStation 5 back compat?

With well over 100m consoles sold since 2013, backwards compatibility is an essential feature for the upcoming PlayStation 5, allowing PS4 and PS4 Pro users the chance to bring their existing library of games over to the next generation console. But in common with the precedent set by the Xbox compatibility team, Sony aims to do more - to allow the extra power of the new console to improve the experience. But realistically, what should we expect? Sony mentions more stable frame-rates and improved resolutions but to what extent can titles actually be improved?

  27. Industries of Titan has the potential to be one of the great management games

I'm not sure what's worse, that I can't figure out why my Citizens keep dying, or that I don't especially care. My smokestacks are at least partially responsible, belching out toxic fumes as they burn the waste littering the surface of Titan like crisp packets across the Pacific. Building my habitation pods next to factory equipment probably isn't helping either. Sleep and industrial machinery are not natural bedfellows.
