Feature | One of the best looking games ever made has a fittingly beautiful artbook
Metal Slug solid.
You might have thought that, with the onwards march of technological process and gaming's own reliance on technology, the answer as to what's the most handsome game would also be one of the most recently released. There's one title that quickly puts paid to that notion, though. Heck, I think that even if you posed the same question 100 years from now only one real answer will remain: Metal Slug has a beauty that's near-timeless.

Remasters, remakes, re-releases and more.
This is the second time we've put together a list of our favourite old games of the year, and things have changed a little since 2018. The spate of remasters for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has dried up as both platform holders shift their focus to the next generation of hardware - and Microsoft brought its impressive backward compatibility initiative for Xbox One to a close in the summer. The good news is that all the preservation and restoration work undertaken this generation hasn't been wasted, as both Microsoft and Sony have promised their next consoles will be fully backwards compatible with their current machines.

Diamond in the buff.
In one of the opening missions of GTA Online's latest update, heist aficionado and lovable oaf Lester talks about how he was a good kid before he played Street Crimes Gang Wars, the in-universe version of Grand Theft Auto. As the bassline hums in the background, he starts to ramble about the gun-toting opportunists trying to lift your cargo, a set of arcade cabinets necessary to kickstart a run-down arcade business, a front for the game's latest (and greatest) heist. "They must be gamers," he says.

Digital Foundry | Xbox Series X rewrites the rules of console design - and the power level should be extraordinary
What the massive casing tells us about system performance.
The rules are changing, the nature of console design is radically evolving, the presumptions we have about the core design limitations in building a new games machine need to be re-evaluated. Microsoft has revealed Xbox Series X and its monolithic casing has almost twice the volume of an Xbox One X - and what this means for performance is tantalising. A full-on generational leap in power is indeed coming, but delivering this clearly required a profound reassessment of the core foundations on which existing console designs are based.

Feature | Meet the Pokémon fans who send hundreds of rare monsters to kids on Christmas Day
Operation Delibird is super effective!
It's difficult to place the exact origins of Operation Delibird, the tradition that sees Pokémon players send out rare and exclusive monsters every Christmas. Gamespot messageboards mention it by name, but the idea was formed after the release of Pokémon X and Y in 2013, due to the addition of the Wonder Trade feature (renamed as Surprise Trade in the most recent games), which lets you send your Pokémon to a stranger with no idea of what you'll get in return.

Digital Foundry | Is the Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 teaser truly a taste of next-gen power?
Can Xbox Series X possibly look this good?
We've seen snippets of Halo Infinite over the last couple of years, but the recent reveal of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 was explicitly trailed as our first taste of what the next generation in console hardware will deliver from a visual perspective. However, confusion surrounds the nature of the content, which has been described as running in real-time and also as in-engine - two terms that are not exactly compatible with one another. Assuming this is much more than the standard CG trailer or the discredited notion of the 'target render', what does the reveal tell us about Microsoft's vision for the next generation of console gaming? It looks great, but can the advances actually be quantified and qualified in any way?
