UPDATE 12/9/19: Fresh from Tokyo Games Show, we've now got a new version of the Yakuza 7 reveal trailer with around a minute of extra footage. Granted, it's mostly of new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga finishing up some ramen, but the whole rest of the trailer now has English subtitles too.

  2. The making of Alpha Protocol, Obsidian's secret best RPG

Imagine a glitzy cinematic sequence where you, as a secret agent, fight your way through an aeroplane soaring through the sky. You're pressing button prompts appearing on the screen while your hero whacks, chops, spins and kicks at the baddie in your way. "You fight all the way down until eventually you beat the guy and rip off his parachute and, I don't know, break his neck, and he floats off and you use his parachute to land." Sounds great, like a James Bond or Jack Bauer or Jason Bourne scene, or something from Uncharted 3, which hadn't been made yet.

  12. Greedfall review - technical shortcomings are overcome by an abundance of heart

Right from the off, through something as simple as fulfilling some last-minute preparations for your big sea voyage to The New World, Greedfall shows you the lengths to which you have to go to fulfil a quest. Everyone wants to set off, but the governor still hasn't shown. You start asking around for hints on the missing nobleman and visit the places where he was last seen. In a tavern, you first have to either settle his tab or repair the furniture he broke in a drunken stupor before you get the next hint.

  15. Wilmot's Warehouse is a puzzler with an intriguing roominess at its centre

Wilmot's Warehouse is a puzzle game that's made me really think about puzzle games. This shouldn't be surprising, since the people who made it were also some of the people responsible for the glorious game Hohokum, which made me think about all kinds of unexpected things. Hohokum was expansive and constantly surprising, Wilmot's Warehouse is tightly focused - and constantly surprising. It's surprising, I would argue, in a way that puzzle games usually are not.

  18. Gears 5 review - a great campaign marred by painful progression

Recommended | Gears 5 review - a great campaign marred by painful progression

Jack of all trades, master of fun.

Gears 5 has a great campaign I'm happy to root for. On the competitive multiplayer front, though, it's a mixed bag. Gears 5 stalwarts Horde and Versus return like battleworn COGs from yet another fight against the relentless Locust menace, but annoyances mar the party. Escape mode offers something new, but it falls flat. And through it all runs a progression system that would feel bad in a free-to-play game, let alone a full-price game.

  25. Radeon RDNA vs GCN: how much faster is AMD's next-gen architecture?

Digital Foundry | Radeon RDNA vs GCN: how much faster is AMD's next-gen architecture?

Performance rated teraflop for teraflop: what could it mean for PS5 and Scarlett?

This is a project I've been wanting to work on for a long time - since it became clear that AMD's brand new Navi architecture would feature in the next-gen consoles, in fact. From PS4 and Xbox One, through the enhanced consoles and up to the reveal of Google Stadia, graphics power has been measured by a somewhat arbitrary unit: the teraflop. And let's be clear: how many teraflops the new consoles have remains a preoccupation for many observers, eager to get some idea of what PlayStation 5 or Project Scarlett may deliver up against the hardware of today. But perhaps the focus needs to shift and maybe we need to take a closer look at the new AMD Navi architecture itself. Put simply, a teraflop of Navi compute should produce much faster game performance than an old-school GCN equivalent - but can we quantify that?

  26. With FIFA 20, it feels like EA Sports has finally fixed pace

EA Sports released the FIFA 20 player ratings yesterday and, unsurprisingly, those top 100 players walked out to all the usual, mega-budget PR fanfare and endless, endless cries of agony from the FIFA subreddit - namely about which player was rated too high (Mustafi?) and which too low (Kaka).

  28. Gears 5 PC feels like a spectacular preview of a Scarlett port

Digital Foundry | Gears 5 PC feels like a spectacular preview of a Scarlett port

It's the best PC conversion we've seen in a long, long time.

Gear 5's PC port is a remarkable piece of work. In fact, in my opinion, it's very, very close to being one of the best PC conversions of all-time. It builds on The Coalition's phenomenal work on Gears 4, but goes several steps further, with graphics options and assets that even outstrip the Xbox One X version. And I can't help but wonder: were elements of this version designed with one eye trained on the consoles to come? The scalability on show here goes significantly beyond additional precision in graphical effects - though obviously, you get that too.
