Digital Foundry | From handheld to 4K: Mortal Kombat 11 delivers on all consoles
Another Switch mobile marvel?
Developer NetherRealms has a history of pushing the envelope for cinematic visuals in fighting games - and Mortal Kombat 11 is no exception, delivering a spectacular experience on all consoles. The physically-based lighting and facial capture tech of Injustice 2 returns, this time put to work with some gruesome fatalities and bone-crunching close-ups. Eve Online is known for its outrageous space battles, propaganda and political maneuverings, but things got real earlier this month when an actual US politician was banned from the game for alleged corruption. The politician in question, Republican lobbyist Brian Schoeneman (in-game name Brisc Rubal), was accused by CCP of breaking a non-disclosure agreement to share confidential information which was then used by another player to conduct "illicit in-game transactions".

Feature | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's VR update isn't really VR, but it is a fun new way to play
Goggle box.
First of all, set your expectations accordingly. The new VR updates for two of Nintendo Switch's most popular games do not hold a candle to the best experiences you might have had on Vive, on Oculus, or even on PSVR. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild boasts VR support for the entire game, but the framerate doesn't rise above the 30fps of the original version, there's limited motion tracking and it all looks a bit of a smear. It's even a push to call it virtual reality, really - the overall impression is more like holding a 3DS screen super close to your face, albeit a 3DS running a game that's as breathtaking today as it was when it launched over two years ago.

Review | World War Z review - a schlocky, slim Left 4 Dead-a-like
Shuffle dance.
Let me come clean first: I've never read World War Z the book, or watched World War Z the film. Mainly because I feel that in that genre everything you could possibly say has been said, from thinly veiled social criticism at government ineptitude or anti-vaccine movements to variations of the message included in each piece of disaster media - we won't be prepared for the apocalypse.

Review | Imperator: Rome review - a smart grand strategy that lacks the spark of Paradox's other efforts
Biggus clickus.
What is it about the Roman empire that makes it so enduringly fascinating, when other historical empires eclipse it in so many ways? There have been bigger empires (British), older empires (Persian), and more ferocious empires (Mongol). Yet few people ever talk about what the Mongols did for us.

Review | Days Gone review - a shallow copy of many better open-world action games
Oregon trial.
From the moment I first heard about Days Gone, I wondered about its reason for existing. With so many open-world titles and games that use post-apocalyptic setting featuring zombies and/or other types of deformed creatures, why make another one? Maybe someone at Sony was looking at Horizon Zero Dawn, first announced around the time that work on Days Gone officially began, and said right girls, you've had your metaphorical glass of 'secco with this one, let's make a post-apocalyptic game for real men. Maybe someone looked at all these other existing titles and thought why not make another - people keep buying them, they'll buy this one, too. But there are only so many times that works. In Days Gone, you can see why.

Feature | P.T., Guitar Hero, RPGs: people are making some cool games in Dreams
Duvet have talent!
The games people are making in Dreams already, a week in [Edit: a fair few of these games were made in the closed beta earlier this year - sorry for overlooking this], are amazing. Someone's recreating P.T., for crying out loud! Another person is remaking Dark Souls interiors and they're pretty convincing. Someone else has made a kind of Guitar Hero while another person has quite a lot of an RPG up and running, and Scrolls in the title! There's a 4x4 off-road buggy, erm, trip, in more than one sense of the word; a moody supernatural first-person shooter; Super Mario Bros; Super Mario 64, Kirby... Really anything you can think of to pay homage to, there's an homage to.

Recommended | SteamWorld Quest review - indie's mechanical masters triumph with yet another genre
Orik dangerous.
I am hopelessly in love with Orik. SteamWorld Quest has heroes instead of classes - a handful of lovable clanking misfits, each of whom bring their own decks and their own focus to the turn-based card battling that makes up the campaign. They're all brilliant. One of them hammers with massive fists and heals with boundless love. Another inflicts shrapnel wounds by literally pelting foes with money. Then there's Orik. Orik the elegant mystery man with the masks. He stands tall and straight, always, seemingly, attentive and yet easy - if that combination is possible. When he strikes, his rapier shifts from stance to stance, slicing baddies to courtly ribbons. The masks change as the moves change, each with its own bonus which lasts to the end of a turn. His deck takes a while to understand, but it is wonderfully brisk and wounding when you get your head around it. The word for Orik is decisive. His sense of poise gives me poise. He is never out of my line-up.
