Video | Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is surprisingly good fun
General Interest.
This week, a series of gifs enticed me to take a look at Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, a game that looks like what might happen if the cast of Morph decided to start doing medieval reenactments. Amusing as it looked with its googly eyes and shonky physics, I'll admit I came to it with a hefty dose of scepticism - the term simulator often being synonymous with 'a bit rubbish'.

Coming as part of this month's Anniversary Update.
Sea of Thieves is, I think, a phenomenal story generator - and excels in delivering the kinds of unpredictable encounters that can so frequently turn a routine play session into a genuinely unforgettable one.

Feature | Sea of Thieves' new competitive Arena mode is 24 minutes of glorious, consequence-free PvP carnage
Hole-y ship!
As someone who ordinarily only tolerates Sea of Thieves' PvP side, rather than proactively engages in it (although, to be clear, I will send you to Davy Jones' Locker if you try and mess with my sloop), I was a little apprehensive when Rare first announced that its multiplayer pirate extravaganza would be getting a new competitive-focussed standalone mode.

Timelapse of a Watch Dogs 2 player walking across the entire map is strangely mesmerising
Glitch hiker.
I loved Watch Dogs 2, less so for the characters and story, more for its wonderful virtual recreation of San Francisco and the way you were able to casually explore it - and even work within it. Role-playing as a cab driver in the city was one of the highlights for me.

Feature | Endo story: in praise of Trials Rising's outliers
Little Donkey, on the dusty road.
Across its various incarnations, the Trials franchise has always been about putting obstacles in your path and seeing how well you can overcome them (with the help of an over-revved dirtbike). The latest and rather magnificent instalment Trials Rising continues this fine tradition but adds a globetrotting twist, casting players as a cross between Barry Sheene and Phileas Fogg by tasking them with riding fairly roughshod over some famous international landmarks.

Feature | Dangerous Driving's sublime action and handling works best at 60fps
How PC, Pro and X power ahead of the standard consoles.
At what point do you release that Three Fields Entertainment really has delivered a worthy homage to the classic Burnout? For me, it's really simple - it's all about the boost drift. An arcade racing game is nothing without its drift mechanic, and in Dangerous Driving it's the key to sustaining maximum velocity - essential not just for the racing and not just for the boost chains (or heat waves, as they're now known) but also in maintaining ramming speed for those classic Takedowns. And yes, the good news is that Dangerous Driving doesn't just nail sublime handling, the gladiatorial racing combat works beautifully too.

I love Civilization 6, but sometimes I pine for the art style of its equally wonderful predecessor, Civilization 5. Civilization 6's cartoony vibe is all well and good, but when you've got an entire civilisation's worth of people resting on your every decision, a serious look is sometimes required.

Digital Foundry | Borderlands GOTY improves on the original, but consoles need more polish
All versions tested.
There's a lot that the new Borderlands: Game of the Year remaster gets right. Yes, there are clear and obvious upgrades over the original release, not least the provision for higher quality textures that ensure that the game holds up well on a modern 4K display. Then there are the enhanced options and quality of life improvements and the fact that PC owners of the original decade-old release get the new version for free - but just how good are the various console ports?

Feature | The weird and wonderful voids of video games
Gazing into the abyss.
Video game worlds are facades, and sometimes we catch a glimpse of what's beyond. Recently, while exploring one of the intricate levels of Dusk, I somehow managed to slip through the cracks and found myself on the other side of the invisible partition that upholds the illusion of coherent space. I'd entered a world of broken, gravity-defying architecture, and there in the middle of the level had opened a pit that revealed a vast grey void beneath my feet. Close by, there was an exasperated message on the ground: "YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE, GO AWAY."

Digital Foundry | Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered delivers more than just a resolution boost
Visual and performance upgrades plus gameplay improvements.
After a relatively lacklustre remastering effort with Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection, Ubisoft has returned with Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered, an altogether more interesting effort. It's more than just a port of the PC version of the original release, with improvements to art asset quality, radically revamped lighting and a lot of tweaks to game mechanics. It's out now on Xbox, PlayStation and PC but it's a shame that we have to wait until next month for the Switch version - the first time we've seen a mainline AC title arrive in handheld form.
