Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Nintendo's first UK chart topper in six years
Almost half of all US Switch owners now own a copy.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has had a strong start in both the UK and North America, according to numbers data from both Nintendo and Chart-Track.
Here in the UK, the game is the first Nintendo-published title to top the charts since Pokémon White in 2011.
Mario Kart 8's release also coincided with a new Switch hardware shipment, sending sales of Zelda: Breath of the Wild up 68 per cent, too.
Across the pond, Nintendo's remastered racer shifted 459,000 copies on its US launch day, Nintendo has said, making it the fastest-selling Mario Kart game ever.
That US sales figure accounts for 45 per cent of the Switch-owning population, Nintendo said, putting US Switch ownership around the million mark.
All in all, not a bad launch for a Wii U game remaster - and proof, perhaps, there's a solid market for games most without a Wii U skipped.
