Pandemic boss Josh Resnick has said that Mercenaries 2 has been officially delayed until the first quarter of next year.

Rumours of a slip have been flying ever since retailers forecast it earlier this month, although both publisher and developer have remained quiet until now.

The reason, according to Pandemic, is that the game simply isn't up to scratch just yet.

"We don't want to slop out a game just to meet a deadline," Resnick told IGN. "Some companies rush products out to meet that big holiday deadline for the massive gift-giving season, and we would rather make sure that every corner of our vast, open-world, highly explosive gameplay is completely polished. We owe that to Mercenaries fans."

And apparently that's that; there's no development problem with one platform, no last minute features to be added - just bug-swatting and elbow grease to go.

The delay will also not affect Pandemic's other title, World War II stealth title Saboteur.

Mercenaries 2 is in development for PS3, 360, PC and PS2.
