Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor dated for October
Orcs must die.
F.E.A.R. developer Monolith's upcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, is set for a 7th October release on PS4 Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, publisher Warner Bros. has announced.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor follows the exploits of a cursed ranger named Talion, who's mysteriously brought back to life by the "Spirit of Vengeance" to slaughter the Sauron's orc forces that murdered his family - a bit like The Crow in Middle-earth then.
The actual gameplay looks similar to Assassin's creed with an emphasis on parkour, light stealth and third-person brawling. There will be choices, though, as you decide whether to murder targets or recruit them to help you in various ways down the line, and there appears to be a Crackdown-esque boss system in play where thinning the numbers of the orc captains turns the tide of battle in your favour when it comes to hunting their lieutenants.
Back in January, Assassin's Creed 2's combat designer Charles Randall called out Shadow of Mordor for its similarities to Ubisoft's historical adventure series, but Warner Bros. claimed this "wasn't something we were consciously going for".
