A 10-episode web series based on gory fighting game series Mortal Kombat is in the works, the wonderfully-named website Bloody Disgusting reports.

Kevin Tancharoen, the man who last year attempted to convince Warner Bros. to fund a new Mortal Kombat film when he pitched the idea with gritty eight-minute short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, will direct.

Michael Jai White, who played Jax in Rebirth, will play Jax in the series, while a number of other characters, including Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana, Mileena and Scorpion are expected to feature. Apparently the plot goes something like this: "A few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect." Classic.

Filming is rumoured to begin next month in Vancouver, Canada. A release date is yet to be announced.

A new Mortal Kombat game is in the works at the Warner-owned developer NetherRealm Studios.
