New Super Smash Bros. to focus on Wii U, 3DS connectivity
Can't "just expand the volume of the game".
The "key" ingredient to Nintendo's next Super Smash Bros. games will be the connectivity between Wii U and 3DS versions, its creator has revealed.
Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai explained that Nintendo would not keep the fighting series fresh by simply piling in more content.
"There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game," Sakurai told IGN. "I intend to change direction a little as we go.
"The key to that's going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U."
The next Super Smash Bros. games were announced last year at E3, although development has only recently begun: Sakurai has been busy working on 3DS shooter Kid Icarus: Uprising.
"I'm really just getting started on this so it's going to take time, but I'll come up with something that uses that link as the game's central axis, so I hope you're looking forward to it," he concluded.
Eurogamer 9/10-scoring Super Smash Bros. Brawl remains one of the Wii's best-selling titles. It added a map editor, robust single-player story mode, a hugely increased character roster and Virtual Console demos, making for an experience deep in Nintendo nostalgia. The fighting bits were good too.
