ICO sequel announcement next week?

Japanese teaser site sparks fresh rumours of an imminent unveiling.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan could be on the verge of unveiling the long awaited and hugely anticipated sequel to PS2 cult classic ICO, according to the furore surrounding a new Japanese teaser website.

Visitors to this website were excited yesterday to discover that one of the "two wonderful titles" the Japanese text promises will be announced within a week or so is seemingly referred to as NICO.

Albeit not particularly overtly - according to reports, one of the background Flash animations on the site contains the title NICO. Nevertheless, "NICO" has long been considered the name of the sequel - Sony owns the trademark, it featured in a leaked presentation that kickstarted all this excitement way back when, and it even featured on an erroneous Amazon.co.uk product page.

Whether Sony is about to announce an ICO sequel or not, though, it does look like one is in planning at the very least. Speaking to this website earlier this year, Sony UK reps admitted that the company had no plans to launch a sequel this year, but hadn't ruled it out.

"ICO has been a cherished favourite amongst PS2 gamers and we realise that a second instalment is eagerly anticipated worldwide," we were told at the time. "Please watch this space." And so we do.
