Fable multiplayer scrapped

Time waits for no man. Not even Molyneux and the Carter brothers...

In order to actually get the game out this year, Lionhead and Big Blue Box have collectively decided to axe the multiplayer element of their forthcoming Xbox-only RPG epic Fable.

According to an extensive FAQ posted on the Lionhead website: "Due to time constraints, we will not be including the Multiplayer feature in Fable. There simply isn't enough time to polish it to the standard we feel would be required to match that of the rest of the game. Instead we have decided to focus our resources on fine-tuning the single-player experience to ensure it is of the highest possible quality."

Bah, and indeed, humbug. Assuming there will be a sequel, they can always sell it on the basis of including this lost multiplayer element, eh? Originally, the plan was to design the game around one central hero, with sidekicks aiding you, but no more. Shame, shame, shame.

The almost ludicrously ambitious game has already suffered delays, having originally been set for a late 2003 release, then Spring 2004, now apparently 'Summer' according to the FAQ. Make that September, then (ooh, we're cynics).

Scanning through the FAQ aided by Mark's nuclear-powered coffee, it's apparent that, no, you can't mount horses, or swim, but you can get married (no idea if gay marriages are outlawed as yet), you can fish (but, hey, don't fall in), you can't play as a woman, you can't have pets (booo), you can grow a beard (Mouse style? Here's hoping), there's weather, a day/night cycle, you can be a criminal and literally get away with murder. Check out the FAQ why don't you?
