Watch TV in Second Life
Channel 4 and others sign on.
Inhabitants of Second Life will soon be able to sit around with their virtual friends watching real TV, including programming from Channel 4 and the Sci-Fi Channel.
It's all thanks to a company called Rivers Run Red, which is partnering with a number of content companies to provide TV channels for virtuallife.tv, according to a report in the Guardian.
The idea will be to grab yourself a small, large or super-size "distribution point" - i.e. TV screen - and install it on your virtual land or in your virtual home.
Programming will be free at launch, with the possibility of pay-per-view being introduced later on, and there will be some form of advertising there to even things out.
Rivers Run Red is aiming to have more than 100 specialist channels streaming video every hour of the day, with user content likely to feature too.
Apparently the likes of the Sci-Fi Channel are interested because it's a good way of engaging online communities - an audience typically lost to traditional TV advertising.
Virtuallife.tv is said to be aiming for a late November launch.
