Vivendi has announced a new Spyro game in development at Eurocom. Dubbed Spyro: A Hero's Tail, it's due out by the end of the year on PS2, Xbox and Cube and - oh I just got it! - scripted by Emmy Award winner J. Stewart Burns. He has been employed seemingly to breathe life into the story, which sees Spyro the purple dragon of justice setting out to save the Dragon Realms from the Evil Red Dragon, who has distributed light-sapping Dark Gems all over the world. The bastard.

With the help of his four playable friends, Spyro has to seek out and destroy the Dark Gems and end the reign of the evil dragon. Along the way he'll witness environments shifting from evil to good in real-time, affecting enemies, music, lighting, world objects and the sky amongst other things (kind of like the effect you get when clouds pass in front of the sun on a hot day, perhaps).

As you'd imagine, Spyro can draw upon new abilities in this one, and we feel sure his enemies will be quivering before the might of his new "Ledge Grab" move, although his Wall Kick and Tail Swing might do a better job. Failing that, he can breathe flames, ice, water and electricity this time, and he can always fall back on other playable characters Hunter the Cheetah, Sgt. Byrd (the dive-bombing pengin), Sparx the Dragonfly or Blink the Mole.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail will doubtless make an appearance at E3 next month.
