Nintendo has sold more Wii consoles across Europe in 12 months than Xbox 360 and PlayStation have managed since launch.

The Mario-maker boasted 8.3 million Wii sales here during 2008, taking the regional installed base to 14.2 million. Microsoft recently announced 8 million Xbox 360 sales in Europe, a figure apparently "more than a million" over PS3.

Nintendo also sold 11.2 million DS units here last year, which we're told is more than any other console in European history (what about Gizmondo?). Total regional sales for the handheld now stand at over 31 million units.

"The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying videogames as part of their daily lives," said chief Nintendo Europe marketeer Laurent "Clooneyface" Fischer.

"This proves that Nintendo's wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe."
