Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty dev updates status on ports
Still on its way to all previously announced platforms.
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty co-developer Oddworld Inhabitants has updated its blog to inform us of the status of the various ports for its Abe's Oddysee remake. Sadly, no release dates were announced, but here's the skinny on each the version coming along:
The PC, Mac and Linux versions of New 'n' Tasty are largely playable - and have been showcased to the public as such - but still need a bit more spit and polish before they go out the door. "We're not quite finished with ensuring the game is fully optimised for all hardware, and have at least a couple of months left before release," the developer said, but it noted that there will be customisable graphic settings and there may even be a closed beta soon.
Next up are the PS3 and Vita versions, which Oddworld Inhabitants said have "proved to be something of a challenge."
"The relatively limited RAM available to us has meant we're having to break down some of the huge scrolling areas seen in the PC and PS4 versions whilst ensuring we retain the same great gameplay," it added. "We're keen to have the PS3 version running smoothly at 720p and the PS Vita version at its native resolution, but this isn't without some degree of difficulty. We know PS3 and Vita owners are desperate to get their hands on the game, but please rest assured we're doing everything we can to make this happen to get it onto the PlayStation Store as soon as possible."
The most recently announced New 'n' Tasty port on Xbox One is still a ways out, but progressing smoothly. "The most recent version to be announced, it shouldn't come as much surprise to learn that development on the Xbox One version is still in its early stages. We envisage a relatively short window before the game is ready for release, however, and expect the game to feature the same great visual and gameplay standards seen on the PlayStation 4 version."
And finally, the Wii U port is being something of a pain, but the developer remains resolute in its quest to bring Abe to Nintendo fans. "Bringing New 'n' Tasty to the Nintendo Wii U is not without its own set of challenges," the developer stated. "While it's true we were initially concerned with the limited storage space on the 8GB 'Basic' Wii U model, we're happy to say that recent fan feedback has assured us this is not as widespread an issue as we first thought."
"Unfortunately, this is not the only technical issue we face on Wii U. Many of the optimisations currently being worked on for the PS3 and PS Vita versions will be used on the Wii U version, so we're dependent on those being completed. There is also specific functionality in Unity that isn't currently supported on Wii U. All in all, we have considerable work to do on this particular version."
"We hope this post goes some way to assure fans that we are still dedicated to getting Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty onto all of the previously announced platforms. We apologise for a lack of progress reports in this area in the past, but without specific updates to give we'd just be repeating ourselves. It's still too soon to say when we can release, but we will announce release dates as soon as we're confident we've reached the highest quality we can."
Oddworld Inhabitant also noted that its Vita release of Munch's Oddysee HD is currently in certification and the mobile port of Stranger's Wrath is due "very soon indeed."
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty may be taking a while to come to other platforms, but the PS4 version certainly sings.
