Over 4.2 million PS4s have been sold worldwide

Compared to 3 million Xbox Ones.

Sony announced that its cumulative sales of the PS4 surpassed 4.2 million as of 28th December.

Comparatively, the Xbox One only sold three million as of New Years. Of course, the PS4 launched a week earlier in the US, but it also launched a week later in various European territories.

Software-wise things are booming for Sony too, as it shifted 9.7 million units of PS4 software. Then again, maybe that number isn't so great relative to how many consoles were sold as it means most people average at two games per platform.

What is impressive is that PS Plus subscriptions have increased by more than 90 per cent since the PS4's launch. Much of this is due to the fact that you need a PS Plus account to play PS4 games in online multiplayer ala Xbox Live Gold. On the plus (no pun intended) side, the service comes with some other sweet perks like the Instant Game Collection, which allows subscribers to download free games like Borderlands 2, DmC, Resogun and Contrast - as the current selection includes.

Sony also revealed that people are taking a liking to its video-streaming services with more than 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts streamed from the console (totaling over 55 million minutes). According to Twitch, 20 per cent of its broadcasts between 23rd December and 3rd January emanated from the platform.

"Based on our success with PlayStation 4, which currently represents twenty percent of our broadcaster base, our vision was on the mark," said Twitch's VP of marketing Matthew DiPietro. "We envision a day when broadcasting your gameplay is a ubiquitous piece of the gaming experience. We're well on our way."
