Pokémon Go Mega Sceptile counters, weaknesses and moveset explained
How to defeat the mega evolved Grass and Dragon-type Pokémon.
Mega Sceptile is the Mega Evolved form of Sceptile, and one of the best Grass-type Mega Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
This is a fan-favourite thanks the fact that it’s the final evolution of the Hoenn starter Treecko. Along with Mega Swampert and Mega Blaziken, these three beloved Pokémon offer extremely powerful options in Pokémon Go.
Like all Mega Evolutions, Mega Sceptile can’t be directly caught in Pokémon Go. Instead, you need to keep defeating it in Mega Raids until you’ve collected enough Mega Sceptile Energy for its temporary evolution. Thanks to the summer 2022 Mega Raid rebalance, this can now be done in one Mega Raid if you defeat it quickly enough!
Below you’ll find Mega Sceptile’s counters and weaknesses to help you succeed in Pokémon Go – just remember you need to have an Sceptile in your Pokémon storage to perform its Mega Evolution.

Mega Sceptile counters and weaknesses in Pokémon Go
The fastest way to collect Mega Sceptile energy is to defeat one in a Mega Raid. Below you’ll find the counters and weaknesses for Mega Sceptile to help you achieve this:
- Mega Sceptile types – Grass and Dragon
- Mega Sceptile is weak against – Ice (2x), Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying and Poison
- Mega Sceptile is resistant to – Ground (2x), Electric, Grass and Water
- Mega Sceptile Mega counters – Mega Glalie or Mega Abomasnow with double Ice-type attacks is going to be the strongest choice here, given Mega Sceptile’s double-weakness to Ice. But, failing that, Mega Salamence will offer huge damage; just be aware that it’s as weak to Mega Sceptile if it runs any Dragon-type attacks!
- Mega Sceptile non-Mega counters – Ice is by far the most important thing here because the damage boost when you see the words 'double weak' is real. Mamoswine or Galarian Darmanitan with double-Ice is the way to go. Kyurem with Dragon Breath and Glaciate is your best Legendary option, though Mewtwo with Ice Beam is decent. Still, Glaceon and Weavile with double-Ice outperform Mewtwo, showing just how powerful exploiting a double-weakness is.
- Number of players to beat Mega Sceptile – Mega Sceptile can theoretically be beaten by just one player if you have a team of top-tier maxed out Ice-type attackers. However, this is a lofty goal for most players. As with most Mega Pokémon, three players at Level 40 is totally reasonable, and five players at Level 30 should be fine, as long as you bring the right Pokémon to the battle!
- Tactics – Ice, Ice, baby! Exploiting this double-weakness to Ice will have Mega Sceptile folding in no time at all. Bring a strong Mega to power up your friends’ Pokémon in the raid and you shouldn’t have too much difficulty taking this Pokémon down.
Mega Sceptile CP in Pokémon Go
Below you’ll find the CP levels for battling for Mega Sceptile and, if defeated, catching an Sceptile after the fight in Pokémon Go:
- Mega Sceptile Raid CP – 45,057 CP
- CP range for catching Sceptile – 2224 to 2317 CP
- Weather (Sunny/Windy) when being caught – 2780 to 2897 CP
The Dual Destiny Season is here! It begins with the Just My Cup of Tea event, which also sees the arrival of Sinistea and the Dual Destiny quest in Pokémon Go! You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest. Don't forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.
Best Mega Sceptile moveset in Pokémon Go
Mega Sceptile can use a variety of Fast and Charged moves in Pokémon Go. The best Mega Sceptile moves would be the combination of Bullet Seed (Fast) and Frenzy (Charged) in raids as a Grass-type attacker. Sceptile isn’t all that great in Go Battle League, so don’t worry about adding a second charged move. Save your Stardust for levelling it up instead!
Here are the Fast and Charged moves Mega Sceptile can use in Pokémon Go:
Fast Moves:
- Fury Cutter (Bug)
- Bullet Seed (Grass)
Charged Moves:
- Earthquake (Ground)
- Dragon Claw (Dragon)
- Leaf Blade (Grass)
- Aerial Ace (Flying)
Legacy Charged Moves:
- Frenzy Plant (Grass)
Everything we know about Sceptile
The Forest Pokémon Sceptile is one of the Hoenn starter Grass-type Pokémon from Gen 3. By gaining Dragon-typing, it joins its compatriots Mega Sceptile and Mega Blaziken in being a dual-type Pokémon.
This fan-favourite is clearly inspired by geckos. You can read the official Pokédex entries for these Pokémon below:
- Treecko: ‘Treecko has small hooks on the bottom of its feet that enable it to scale vertical walls. This Pokémon attacks by slamming foes with its thick tail.‘
- Grovyle: ‘The leaves growing out of Grovyle’s body are convenient for camouflaging it from enemies in the forest. This Pokémon is a master at climbing trees in jungles.‘
- Sceptile: ‘The leaves growing on Sceptile’s body are very sharp edged. This Pokémon is very agile—it leaps all over the branches of trees and jumps on its foe from above or behind.‘
For those looking for a shiny, you’ll be pleased to know that shiny Treecko, Grovyle and Sceptile were released on Treecko Community Day in March 2019. As a result, Mega Sceptile is also in the game!
Shiny Treecko swaps its lime green for a light teal colour. Its darker green tail becomes red instead. Its evolution, Grovyle, goes from a darker forest green for a mint green, while Sceptile completely changes course and goes for an aqua colour! While this makes it look like a Water-type, it looks awesome, so nobody is really complaining. This colouring is conserved with shiny Mega Sceptile, which makes us incredibly happy.
Good luck defeating Mega Sceptile in Pokémon Go!
