Pokémon Go Up-Grade - evolve Porygon into Porygon2 and how to get the Up-Grade

Evolution method for the new Gen II Pokémon Poryon2, and how to get the Up-Grade.

Gen 2 is finally here and with it come not just new Pokémon like Porygon2, but new items like the Up-Grade, too.

That, in turn, means new methods for evolution: the Up-Grade was used for evolving Porygon2 in the main Pokémon games by having it hold the item when being traded - a mechanic that's not in Pokémon Go at all as things stand.

So with that in mind, how do you evolve Porygon into Porygon2, and likewise how do you get the Up-Grade in Pokémon Go?.

The answers to all that can be found below, but while you're here, it's worth noting that there are several other special evolution items which work in precisely the same way: the Sinnoh Stone, the Metal Coat for Steelix and Scizor, the Dragon Scale for Kingdra, the Sun Stone for Bellossom and Sunflora, and the King's Rock for Slowking and Politoed.

How to evolve Porygon into Porygon2 in Pokémon Go

Porygon evolves into Porygon2 in the main Pokémon series via held-item trading, much the same as for other Gen 2 Pokémon like Steelix, Politoed, and Kingdra.

Again, in a similar fashion to those Pokémon, in Pokémon Go the method is different: you'll simply need the same evolutionary item, in this case the Up-Grade, and the right amount of Candy, to evolve your Porygon into Porygon2. Once you have them, head to the usual spot in the in-game menus, and evolve from there!

The Max Out Season is here and includes a new global event, Wild Area. Currently, the Simply Groundbreaking event is running. You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest. Don't forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

How to get the Up-Grade in Pokémon Go

To get the Up-Grade in Pokémon Go, you'll need to start hitting the streets.

That's because, like with the other new evolutionary items such as the Dragon Scale, Metal Coat, King's Rock and Sun Stone, the Up-Grade can only currently be acquired through random drops from a Pokéstop.

However, there's a twist - fortunately, there is some strategy here after all! A special evolution item will drop on the seventh day of your PokéStop Daily Bonus streak. There's no guaranteeing which evolution item you'll get, but with only five in the game at least you hopefully shouldn't have to wait too long to get a hold of all the items you need.
