Pokémon Go XP Challenge steps and rewards

All of the rewards for the January challenge.

The XP Challenge runs throughout January 2022 in Pokémon Go.

This is the second monthly challenge introduced as part of the Season of Heritage, with the first being last month's Stardust Challenge.

Throughout January, you'll receive double catch XP for your first catch every day and, if you have access, you'll be able to complete the XP Challenge for a new avatar item.

How to access the XP Challenge in Pokémon Go

If you want to complete the XP Challenge in Pokémon Go, then you need to pre-purchase a Tour: Johto ticket before Monday, 10th January 2022.

These tickets can be brought through the in-game store - accessed via the main menu - and can not be purchased using PokéCoin. A ticket costs £9.99 / $11.99.

Pre-purchasing a ticket will not only grant you access to the XP Challenge and the full Tour: Johto event, but the Catch Challenge running in February as well.

XP Challenge quest steps and rewards in Pokémon Go

Below you'll find all of the requirements and rewards for the January XP Challenge in Pokémon Go.

This section does contain spoilers for the full quest, so, if you want to be surprised, we recommend skipping.

The XP Challenge, like last month's Stardust Challenge, is divided into an overall tally for the XP you'll earn for the main reward and 15 individual steps.

The Goomy Hat for your avatar is the ultimate reward for this challenge.

It's important to note that, while the overall tally records every piece of XP you earn till the goal is reached, the individual steps reset. This means if you receive 10,000 XP when you're 100 XP away from completing a step, the remaining XP will not count as progress towards the next step.

The main reward for the XP Challenge is the Goomy Hat and, if you either don't complete the challenge or don't partake in it, this item will be available from the in-game avatar store when January ends.

Playing daily, catching a good number of Pokémon, partaking in raids, increasing your friendship level and completing special or timed research quests are excellent ways to earn XP. If you haven't completed the XP Challenge by the final days of January, we recommend using a Lucky Egg to double your XP earnings.

Along with the rewards listed below, you'll also receive a small amount of XP for completing each step.

XP Challenge dates and bonuses in Pokémon Go

The XP Challenge includes a bonus running throughout January 2022, which will be available to everyone - whether you've pre-purchased a Tour: Johto ticket or not.

This bonus is double catch XP for your first catch of the day.

Both the XP Challenge and its bonus will be available from Saturday, 1st January to Monday, 31st January 2022 at 11:59pm (local time). Remember - to partake in the XP Challenge you must pre-purchase a Tour: Johto ticket before Monday, 10th January 2022.
