Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon - Mount Hokulani Observatory, Totem Togedemaru and Captain Sophocles' Trial for Electrium Z

Our in-progress walkthrough for the whole Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon island challenge and beyond.

Mount Hokulani, the Hokulani Obersvatory and Captain Sophocles' Trial against Totem Togedemaru for Electrium Z are the next challenges you'll face, as it's time to pick up your first Z-Crystal on Ula'ula Island.

Here on this page we'll explain all you need to know about the story and main events as they unfold here, and as with all pages of our walkthrough we'll highlight any and all trainers, items and wild Pokémon available to catch as well.

For more general guides and other walkthrough pages like this meanwhile, head back to our main Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon walkthrough and guide hub.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Hokulani Observatory, Totem Togedemaru and Captain Sophocles' Trial for Electrium Z

The bus from Route 10 will actually whip you straight to the top of the mountain. You can head back down the route - known as Mount Hokulani - on foot right away, but you might as well do your trial first now you're here!

There are a couple of small sidequests you can do for the Scientists in the Observatory, and there are some items to collect around the mountaintop town, but otherwise you can pretty much head straight into your trial.

Start by heading inside the Observatory to find Captain Sophocles in one of the back rooms. First of all, you'll be asked to go round up some escaped Charjabug, out the front of the Obersvatory again. They're easy enough to find, hidden in the patches of tufty grass and then one more behind the bus you arrived on.

Back inside, you have probably the trickiest puzzle yet to solve: rearranging Charjabug to connect the current and power Sophocles' machine. Here are the solutions, but skip them if you want the challenge, of course!

  1. Puzzle 1: Top left once. Top right once.
  2. Puzzle 2: Top right once. Bottom left once. Bottom right twice.
  3. Puzzle 3: Bottom left twice. Top right once. Top left twice.

Each time you complete the puzzle you'll face a Pokémon - starting with an Elekid, then and Electabuzz, then a great little bait-and-switch where you actually face a Totem Togedemaru with boosted Special Attack.

Ground attacks will do 4x damage against it, but its SOS allies may require different approaches - Fire and Electric for Skarmory, and Poison or Ground for Dedenne.

You'll be rewarded with Electrium Z from Sophocles, who'll also take the opportunity to show you round the new Battle Agency. After that, Molayne will return - the chap you met a little earlier - and give you the Professor's Mask, to return to Kukui back at Malie Garden.

You can fly back to Malie City if you like, but we highly recommend you visit Mount Hokulani's route down the mountain instead, thanks to some excellent rare Pokémon that are available there and there alone.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Mount Hokulani

A winding, downhill route, Mount Hokulani houses a variety of rare and potentially powerful Pokémon, as well as some handy items and trainers too.

Next up: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon - Returning Kukui's Mask, battle Guzma, and Nugget Bridge

Explore either side of the road, as there some easily-missable spots for items in particular along the way, and if you're after a decent Steel-type Pokémon be sure to catch a Beldum, which eventually evolves into the powerful Metagross. You can also find Ditto here, for breeding purposes, and the likes of Minior and Elgyem that you won't get anywhere else!
