PS3 firmware 2.7 is now available to download, introducing text chat and a few other minor tweaks.

The headline feature is text-based chat for communicating with up to 15 PSN friends using Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard or other supported devices.

According to the release notes on our PS3, there's also an "internet search" option for finding out more about games, a dynamic normaliser for reducing volume changes between songs, and a copy-and-paste function for lifting stuff from web browser to the PS3's text entry. Sort of like this paragraph, but in reverse.

Meanwhile, US gamers can also back up video shop purchases to external devices, and play back said videos on PSP.

There's a video walkthrough of the changes over on the PlayStation Blog.
