PS3 sales have rocketed up 178 per cent after the introduction of a new model and a price cut, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

It has resulted in the third strongest week for the platform since its launch in the UK, propelling it ahead of its main rival the Xbox 360. However, it still fell behind the weekly leaders DS and Wii, respectively.

Sony put its Christmas strategy into effect last Wednesday, introducing the new 40GB model with less functions for GBP 299, and reducing the 60GB bundle with two first-party games and a Sixaxis pad to GBP 349.

The strong sales prompted a resurgence in PS3 software, too, as Resistance: Fall of Man scuttled up to eighth in the UK Charts, while Heavenly Sword re-entered at 14th, MotorStorm revved to 18th and Formula 1: Championship Edition showed up in 24th.

Tracing a line through the rise in fact on GamesIndustry.biz reads like a vertical hill.
