James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire (Cube)
by Anthony Byrne
How can you play a Bond game without thinking "it's not Goldeneye"? This thought has put me off buying any Bond game for a long time. I had the displeasure of playing Nightfire on PC and TWINE on PlayStation, so despite having never played Agent I was of the opinion it sucked.
Well after shelling out €15 of my hard earned cash I demanded quality gaming, and lo and behold it delivered right from the start. The premise is you are James Bond, there are bad people and you must kill them or sneak by them. Either on foot, in a fast car or in a tank which is very enjoyable. With a plot written on a beermat (it does seem that way, but it's not an issue), it's a game that mixes driving (on rails also) and FPS very well and seamlessly drops you from one to the other. The plot is original as in not taken from any specific movie but parts will seem familiar to anyone who has seen them all.
The game has been out for nearly two years but it still looks and sounds rather good. Some levels have a nice feel of an actual place about them rather then misaligned rooms and houses. Speeding through Budapest is a good example - it actually seems like a city (the first few times anyway). The sound is quite good but against it, it doesn't seem to play a part in the actual game. No footsteps need to be heard or camera whirring but overall it keeps with the game with nice background effects.
Overall its a very good game that oozes quality and has only some minor flaws and a couple of large ones: weapon selection can be troublesome whilst under pressure, and overall the game is far too short. But it does have good replay value in attaining high scores for each level. For the money I paid for it it's a superb purchase and one I'm amazed I went so long without having.
