Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition finally gets the HD textures it deserves

Thanks to fans.

Capcom's Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition will soon finally live up to its title - thanks to a fan-made mod.

The 2014 PC re-release launched last spring and boasted of 1080p graphics and 60fps gameplay.

But its visuals still relied heavily on the original 2004 GameCube release, albeit with upscaled textures and models. And, disappointingly, it also used the original PS2 cut-scenes in companion campaign Separate Ways.

Now, two Resi fans are adding their own cleaned-up textures in order to make the game finally shine (thanks, Kotaku). It's clearly a labour of love for the pair, who are appropriately named Cris and Albert (but are sadly not the real Redfield and Wesker).

The project has now reached the game's final third, the Island. A mod for the Village section is now available to download separately.

The modders are hunting down the original textures used by Capcom's artists - often simply via Google Image Search - and creating new HD versions from scratch.

"Finally I reached the Island area!" Albert wrote over the weekend. "The first two rooms of the last third of the game are specially full of graphical inaccuracies. For now, I fixed some of them and added detail to the blockiest models (barrels, pipes, doors). There's still lots of seam and mapping issues here and there.

"This time, like in the Village area, most of the textures are full re-creations. From now on, the majority of textures you see in the game are quite random (with some exceptions). Some of them were taken directly by Capcom staff but its randomness makes it impossible to find the originals in real life.

"And some of them are based on textures you can find on the Internet (with patience and a bit of luck ;)). But many times even if we find the original textures, they are not at a high enough resolution to be usable. Consequently, we must re-create them from scratch anyway."
