Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice announced for 3DS

Despite lowly sales of the last games.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice has been announced as the latest Sonic adventure for 3DS.

Due this winter, Fire & Ice is being developed by Sanzaru Games, who handled last year's poorly received 3DS-exclusive Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. It also developed the better received Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time before that.

Fire & Ice's single-player campaign sounds like rather traditional Sonic fare with the speedy blue hedgehog teaming up with his furry pals Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks to thwart Dr. Eggman's maniacal schemes, along with those of a new villain named D-Fekt.

But there is one new major feature with multiplayer Bot Racing. Players will be able to unlock bots to challenge their friends across various courses.

This latest Sonic Boom title might seem like an odd announcement given that the last two Sonic Boom titles, Rise of Lyric on Wii U and Shattered Crystal on 3DS, only made a combined total of less than half a million sales, as of February.

Yet Sega is staying the course on this one. After all, it already has a TV series and toy line dedicated to the Sonic Boomiverse.
