Sony has announced plans to cut the price of PlayStation 3 in Japan and introduce a 40GB model, just like it's doing over here.

Turns out the 40GB unit, which is missing backwards compatibility, some memory card slots and USB ports, will cost less than the 20GB version.

As of October 17th Japanese gamers will be able to pick up a 20GB PS3 for JPY 44,980 (GBP 189), down from JPY 49,980.

The 40GB model, which goes on sale this Thursday, will cost JPY 39,980 (GBP 168).

And the 60GB PlayStation 3, currently retailing for around JPY 60,000, will come down to JPY 54,980 (GBP 230).

As announced last week, Sony is also planning to drop the price of the 60GB PS3 and introduce a 40GB model in Europe.

It emerged yesterday that the 60GB version will be discontinued in European territories once stocks are gone.
