Sony has blown steam out of its ears and refused to comment on rumours it is redesigning the PS2 for the New Year.

It was responding to speculation in MCV, which said a new model with a built-in power supply would be released in the US next year for USD 99 - that is 40 dollars less than it currently goes for.

Apparently putting everything inside the casing makes it all a bit cheaper to produce, allowing the platform holder to slice a hefty limb off of the price.

Earlier this month Sony trumpeted that it had flogged 120 million PlayStation 2 consoles around the world.

Should this new unit turn out to be real, it would further reinforce observations that the PS2 is still a crucial component of Sony's strategy.
