Square Enix announced today that it has signed the Unreal Engine 3 from Gears of War developer Epic Games.

It's still uncertain which titles will be announced as using the engine, as the company has only been using the toolset since December.

"The agreement was signed in December 2006," said a spokesperson for Sqaure Enix. "So we haven't had the tools for very long. We've just adapted to using Unreal Engine 3 as a toolset, so therefore as to which titles to be developed using it? It's still to be determined."

Currently the most anticipated title being developed by Square Enix is Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PlayStation 3. A demo is expected at E3 in July.
