Surreal stealthy open-world noir adventure Tangiers emerges on Kickstarter
Use your words.
Back in May I wrote about a promising looking avant garde stealth adventure called Tangiers and unsurprisingly, it's now on Kickstarter.
Aside from looking incredible, Tangiers is full of unique, innovative ideas. The game casts you as an outsider to this strange world and it's your goal to infiltrate this fractured, nightmarish urban sprawl and dispose of five beings. The Bristol-based developer Andalusian noted that its core stealth mechanics will feel similar to Looking Glass' Thief series - with an emphasis on sticking to the shadows - but it's got a host of peculiar features that sound unlike anything else out there.
The world is constantly transforming, for one. "Your interactions with the world cause it to fall apart," Andalusian noted in its description. "In homage to [William] Burrough's cut-up technique, the world collapses and rebuilds itself the more you interact with it - future areas rebuilt with the fragments and personality of places you mistreated. From this every play-through will, subtly or drastically, be unique to you." The developer added that not only will Tangier's geography adapt to your presence, but its difficulty will be reactive as well.
Furthermore, spoken dialogue is captioned and you can steal these words and manifest them in reality, somehow. For example, if a character mentions rats, you can steal the word "rats" and use it to summon an actual swarm of vermin. Conversely, words can be used as keys to unlock hidden areas or bait guards into chasing red herrings.
It's a bit hard to envision, but the pitch video above at least gives us a glimpse of Tangiers' shadowy, enticing world.
Those who pledge £10 will receive a DRM-free copy of Tangiers upon its estimated August 2014 release on PC, Mac and Linux; £20 comes with the artbook and soundtrack; and £35 will come with early beta access and behind-the-scenes footage leading up to the game's release. Curiously, the beta will not actually be part of the final game, but rather a standalone prequel that should demonstrate what the full game will look like.
Andalusian is looking for a minimum of £35K to fund Tangiers. After two days it's raised £5,669 with 26 days to go before its 13th August deadline.
