Spyro: Myths Awaken fan game is looking pretty fly
A large-scale project.
Ask any Spyro fan why they still enjoy playing the old games, and they will probably come back with the same answer: nostalgia. It's motivated an entire remake of the original Spyro Trilogy, and it's the word that instantly sprang to mind when I came across Spyro: Myths Awaken.
The game is a fan-made sequel to the Insomniac trilogy, and takes place in an alternative timeline to the events of Enter The Dragonfly and A Hero's Tail. Instead of re-doing the artwork of the original stories (like Spyro: Reignited Trilogy), the game will provide a brand new story with the retro Spyro design. It's mainly being made by a small team with Unity, but as you can see by the latest progress video, it's ambitious.
According to team member Cyreides, the story begins with a bored Spyro and Sparx "longing for new adventure". Things will not stay peaceful for long, however, as an enigmatic figure known as Gaia will whisk Spyro away to Mythica, where he will have to prevent Medusa from succeeding in her quest for immortality. Be careful what you wish for, Spyro.
Like the original Spyro games, the homeworlds are due to be themed - Sky Citadel, for instance, will have a Griffin as a boss. The plans are for the game to have four homeworlds, four boss realms, four mini-boss realms and 24 regular realms. There are also plans for new NPCs, such as Bags Jr. (as if one greedy bear wasn't already enough). To help you keep track of all this, the team has even created a Spyro: Myths Awaken wiki.
It sounds like an enormous undertaking, so it's unsurprising the project doesn't yet have a release date. But given the project only started in February last year, the test demos and videos certainly look promising. Cyreides told me the team aims to consistently release update videos and would like to do more demos in future. You can check out some of these existing demos on the Spyro: Myths Awaken Game Jolt page, or join the Discord group to be first to hear updates about the game.
