Tomorrow's Halloween-themed Fortnitemares event gets official start time
UPDATE: Now live and fully detailed.
UPDATE 29/10/19: Fortnite's Halloween-themed event, better known as Fortnitemares, is now underway on all platforms, introducing a range of appropriately spooky new limited-time modes, challenges, and rewards, as outlined in developer Epic's announcement post.
Fortnitemares' centrepiece this year is arguably the battle against the fearsome Storm King - the big bad of Fortnite's other mode, Save the World. This particular skirmish unfolds in its own separate limited-time mode and pits squads against the intimidatingly large Storm King and his waves of undead pals. Those that survive get a lovely spooky umbrella for their troubles.
There's a bit of undead malarky happening in the main battle royale mode too, with Season 2's brand-new island map changing for the very first time. Now, the centre of the map, dubbed the Isle of Storms, is spewing out evil forces, and will continue to do so until players stem the tide.
Accompanying these activities are a range of free challenges, and a number of vaguely spooky rewards, including seasonal sprays and style options for the Backboard Back Bling. There's also a premium set of challenges available as part of Fortnite's Cryptic Curse Bundle, which includes the Wrath Outfit, Time Keeper Back Bling, and unlockable additional styles.
This year's Fortnitemares event is live now and finishes next Monday, 4th November.
ORIGINAL STORY 28/10/19: Fortnite is dusting off its sack of Halloween swag and readying to smother its brand-new Season 2 battle royale map in spookiness for the return of its Fortnitemares event tomorrow.
We knew it was coming, thanks to various teases from Epic over last week, but it's now confirmed that Fortnitemares will be kicking off tomorrow, 29th October, at 1pm GMT/6 am PT.
There's no word yet on what this year's Fortnitemares will bring, but the usual selection of limited-time, event-specific challenges and rewards are practically guaranteed - and we do have a single teaser image with which to occupy our minds until everything is revealed in full. So, um, any strong views on whether these are tentacles or mandibles?
Whatever tomorrow's event brings, it'll have to go all-out to make the same impact as last year's Fortnitemares. That event arrived at a high-point in Epic's ongoing Fortnite narrative, following weeks of curious activity as much-loved cube of evil, Kevin, left his sinister mark on the game's map. Admittedly, the PvE-focussed Cube Monsters that eventually emerged as a result weren't, it's fair to say, exactly a fan-favourite, so there's definite room for improvement.
This year, fans are still settling into Fortnite 2.0, with ne'er a hint of any oncoming darkness to be found in its squeaky new world. As such, it'll be fascinating to see exactly how Fortnitemares - Season 2's first world-changing event - unfolds. All will be revealed, presumably including some resolution on that whole tentacle/mandible thing, tomorrow.
