Splatoon is Wii U's fastest-selling new franchise in UK
But not enough to topple The Witcher 3.
Splatoon is the Wii U's fastest-selling new franchise to date in the UK, overtaking undead Ubisoft launch title ZombiU.
The paint-based third-person team shooter is also the fifth fastest-selling Wii U title, according to official figures from Chart-Track, which do not include download sales.
Splatoon sold well enough to secure second place in this week's UK chart, but it failed to edge out CD Projekt's The Witcher 3, which safely secured itself a second top spot in the UK all-formats charts.
Despite charting in second, it's unclear whether Splatoon met Nintendo's expectations. Wii U sales have been low across the board, while the success stories on the console have come from Nintendo's reliance on old franchises (Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros., Super Smash Bros.). Nintendo has also spent heavily on Splatoon's launch campaign, with adverts on TV, in cinemas and online.
Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto 5 and FIFA 15 were third and fourth, ahead of Farming Simulator 15 and Battlefield Hardline.
Project Cars, Destiny, Mortal Kombat X and Minecraft: Xbox Edition rounded out the rest of the top 10.
