The director of Japanese gangster series Yakuza has turned his hand to the shooter genre with a new game called Binary Domain.

Toshihiro Nagoshi told Famitsu (translated by 1UP) Binary Domain is an online-focused science fiction robot game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No release window is mentioned.

Unlike Yakuza, Binary Domain is being produced with a global audience in mind, which should make it likely for release on these shores.

The game's set in a 2080 Tokyo and aims to make online gaming as "fun" as possible. It'll encourage teamwork and the enemy AI will be more complex than any in a game Nagoshi's studio has made. Screenshots suggest the game will be played from a third-person perspective.

While gameplay details are thin on the ground, there is cause for optimism. The Yakuza series is a hit in Japan and with enthusiastic Western fans. Eurogamer's Yakuza 4 review turned up an 8/10 from Keza MacDonald.
