Yep, Nobuo Uematsu's new Final Fantasy song sounds lovely
Mournful piano intro then...
Legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu has created a new song for Final Fantasy, and lovely it is indeed.
Dragonsong is the main theme song of Heavensward, the first expansion for massively multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn. It's due out on 23rd June.
Uematsu is famous for scoring most of the Final Fantasy games. His work has been released as soundtracks and arranged for concert performances around the world. In 2012 Aerith's Theme, written by Uematsu for Final Fantasy 7, was voted into the number 16 position in the annual Classic FM Hall of Fame top 300 chart. It was the first time a piece of music written for a video game had appeared in the chart. (Actually, it turns out this isn't quite true. Elder Scrolls was at #238 and Aerith's Theme #16 that year, so Elder Scrolls played first in the countdown. But Uematsu remains the highest placed living composer with a top 10 for each of the last three years.)
Dragonsong is classic Uematsu. It begins with a mournful piano intro before vocals, performed by Susan Calloway, kick in. Then, a crescendo towards a bombastic, rousing finish.
While Dragonsong is lovely, for me it's not up there with Uematsu's best. My favourite Uematsu composition will, probably, forever remain To Zanarkand, from Final Fantasy 10. Listen to it over your lunch with the video, below.
