Zelda - Kaya Wan and Shields From Water trial solution in Breath of the Wild

How to find and clear the Lanayru Region trial.

Kaya Wan is one of the many Shrines located throughout Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The challenge inside, named the Shields From Water trial, is a puzzle that has you use the Cryonis ability to navigate water and tackle Guardian Scouts as you go. Get it right, and you'll walk out a success.

If you need help finding and solving other Shrines, our Shrine location maps page can help, while our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough and guide covers other aspects of the game.

Where to find Kaya Wan

The Kaya Wan shrine is located within the Lanayru region, specifically right behind the Wetland Stable. To get there, paraglide as far west as you can from Lanayru Tower, and traverse the Wetlands area of shallow marshes and water..

Keep heading pretty much due west, and you'll soon see some people milling around, and the large horse's head that adorns the top of the stable tent. The Kaya Wan Shrine is just behind it.

There's no puzzle to solve here in order to access the shrine, so simply dive in when you're ready.

Kaya Wan and Shields From Water trial solution

The first stage of the Shields From Water trial is pretty simple: use three Cryonis ice pillars to make your way across the water to the ledge on the far side. Note that your third pillar needs to be a horizontal one placed as high as possible in the waterfall on the back wall.

After that, you have a bit of a greater challenge. First things first, there's a Guardian Scout I in the way, which you can eliminate however you like - we used the perfect parry method to reflect the laser back at it, which will kill it in one.

The first of two chests is on your right in this room. To get it, use Cryonis pillars to traverse the water, with one directly under the chest to raise it up in order for you to open it and find an Ancient Core.

Then use Cryonis again to get to the next platform, and the third room.

Now, you'll be facing down a corridor of water, with two more Scouts at the end. A wooden raft of sorts will appear periodically, which you can ride to the far side.

Ride it as far as the first Guardian Scout's platform and hop onto that platform where the first Scout stands - you'll need to take both of them out whilst doing this, which can be a bit awkward, so use a Cryonis pillar to block the flow of your raft downstream to buy yourself plenty of time.

With the final two Guardian Scouts out of the way, it's time to grab the second chest. Look to the other side of the water from the first platform, and you'll see a gate in the wall. Pop a Cryonis pillar underneath it to raise it up, and you can jump and swim to the chest on the other side, which contains a Knight's Broadsword.

Now, all that's left is to reach the exit podium. Hop back on your raft, or Cryonis pillar, and jump off the end of the river where it turns into a waterfall.

Timed correctly, you should be able to paraglide to the exit no problem - and you're done!
