Impressive new trailer for no-fantasy RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Feast on it. Gorget.
Czech developer Warhorse has put out a tasty trailer for medieval no-fantasy role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. And it continues to look very impressive.
The choreographed swordfight demonstrates a desire to make melee combat as real as possible, for you to feel what a fight back then would have really been like. And that historical immersion extends to everything else - across a believable world that's beautiful in its ordinariness.
A playable technical alpha has been available for a while, so the game is more than trailer trickery, but realise there is still a long way to go to put together an open-world sandbox game of this magnitude - a world of 16km2. To put that into perspective, Skyrim had a world of 37km2, and The Witcher 3 a world of around 64km2.
Warhorse plans a Kingdom Come: Deliverance Early Access beta release later this year, and a full game release next summer - the game had once been promised for December 2015. The beta release, however, will only be around a quarter of the full game.
Remember, too, that Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a Kickstarted game. It successfully raised around $1.75m and has added to that since, totalling around $2.37m now. Warhorse told me around $3m (in US dev terms) had been spent before Kickstarter and, more importantly, that there was also an investor willing to spend a lot more on the game should it be successful on Kickstarter. In other words, there's a lot more money in this project than meets the eye.
Warhorse is a studio led by former Mafia 2 director Daniel Vavra, as well as other experienced members of the Czech development scene.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the first of three planned instalments, and it's in development for PC and Mac. PS4 and Xbox One have been talked about, but take that with a pinch of salt for now.
