Digital Foundry | Ninja Gaiden 2 Black isn't perfect - but it's the best version yet
And it's targeting 120fps.
Unreal Engine 5 is one of the most resource-intensive game engines out there: just reaching 60 frames per second while utilising Lumen global illumination and Nanite micro-geometry is a serious challenge for developers. With that in mind, it perhaps comes as no surprise to see that Team Ninja opted for 'master ninja difficulty' in remaking Ninja Gaiden 2. Not only are UE5's cutting-edge features deployed in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, the developers are choosing to target 120fps on a console. Did the studio achieve its target or is it just a step too far for current generation hardware?

Now Playing | A mysterious language, secret powers… you don't get that in Wordle
LOK Digital is hard to TLAK about.
Real talk: as a deeply lazy human being, there are some games that I kind of secretly hope aren't going to be my bag, because if they are my bag I'm going to have an awful time describing how they work. The problem with this is that the games that are hardest to describe are often the best games. They're the games where you feel like you have a weird kind of duty to find the words for them, so you can tell everyone else how special they are.

Feature | Games preservation took steps forward in 2024 - but still has a long way to go
"They are just sitting on this world of history and it's on a Google Drive."
Silent-era American films have a better survival rate than classic video games. Let that sink in. The findings of 2023's Video Game History Foundation report suggested that 87 percent of classic video games released in the United States are "critically endangered". What this means materially is that only 13 percent of games released before 2010 are readily accessible today. Historically, preservation has been a concern exclusively for academics and dedicated game history buffs, but in the last few years, preservation as a field has made significant progress in puncturing the games culture bubble. As stories of live-service games being taken offline before they have a chance to find an audience become more frequent, the awareness that our favourite digital pastime is under an existential threat is more apparent than ever.

Review | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 review
Peasant company excluded.
Direct sequels in games are funny things, aren't they? As narrative contrivances go for honouring all the choices you made and characters you built in the first part of the story, there are usually two schools of thought on how to keep building on that foundation effectively. One is the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor route, where developers rummage even deeper into their bag of tricks and somehow emerge with even wilder skills and abilities that make the first game's power curve look like training wheels.

Review | Civilization 7 review
The king isn't dead, but now's a good time to come at him.
Civilization 7 is by no means a bad game. I open with that to acknowledge its competence, and to damn it. Civ is the archetypal 4X, and in some senses, Civ 7 remains a standard-bearer. It's better, in a general sort of way, than most recent attempts to unseat or deconstruct it. There's lots going on, production values are high, and it innovates with a new structure and revamped diplomacy, city expansion, and more.
