Antlion and the Antlion Infestation Hunt location and requirements

Before you get to the actual battle, here's everything you need to know about Antlion and the Antlion Infestation Hunt:

  • Prerequisites: Reach Mt. Bur-Omisace.
  • Recommended level: 45
  • Petitioner location: Bhujerba, The Staras Residence
  • Mark location: Site 9, Lhusu Mine
  • Reward: 4300 Gil, Bubble Belt, Sickle Blade

Head to the house in the middle of Bhujerba and talk to Niray to find out that her kids have gone missing in the mines. You'll get the Site 3 Key which will open the door in the far side of the cave where you met Ba'Gamman and fought the Rocktoise in Cry of Its Power, so make your way there.

As you go you'll bump into one of the kids and he'll run off. Keep making your way through the mine, unlock the gate with the key, and into the new area. There are a few new enemies here; the Headless are weak to wind so Aeroga is handy if they try and mob you, and watch out for the Gazers - if you Flee into a new area they can follow you. When you reach Transitway 2 you'll find an orange crystal so if it's proving too much you can now run away and have a convenient re-entry point for later.

When you finally enter Site 9 take it slowly and deal with any smaller Antlions and Killer Mantises you find, and your mark will be hiding at the far end of the tunnel with a lot of Killer Mantises in tow.

Antlion strategies and how to defeat it

When the fight starts give everyone a Black Belt, equip your strongest character with a Greatsword, then hit them with Decoy and send them in to tackle the main target. Have your healer do their thing as usual, and set one character up to do nothing but cast Aeroga on the Killer Mantises - the Antlion can feed on them, and each time it does its level will increase making it a much tougher target so you need to keep his food supply as scarce as possible. If the Antlion gets caught in the Aeroga so much the better.

When all the Mantises are gone shift your Aeroga attacks onto the Antlion, and assuming he didn't get too much to eat he should be down to 25% HP in no time. At that point he'll Enrage himself and start to hit more heavily, so if you start to struggle use a Quickening to wear him down.

When the fight is over Yrlon will mention he dropped another key somewhere. It's not here, though, so don't bother looking - make your way out, and use the switch off to the south in Transitway 1 to open the large gate giving you a shorter route in and out. We will be back!

Return to Niray for your reward - the Bubble Belt is well worth having as it'll give anyone wearing it double HP (up to a maximum of 9999), invaluable in some boss fights - and then head to the Hunter's Camp in the Phon Coast. There's a large circular rock formation with The Man Who Fell leaning up against it, and on the ground next to him is the Site 11 Key.
