Digital Foundry | DF Retro: Revisiting Sega's Nomad - the original Switch?
A handheld/home console hybrid... sound familiar?
What makes Switch so special is its enticing blend of portable and console gaming in a single device, but while Nintendo may be the first company to find real success with this idea, it certainly wasn't the first to try. Flash back to October 1995 and Sega released the Genesis Nomad - a handheld/home console hybrid with a remarkably similar feature set to the Switch. Mobile and big screen play? No problem. Support for multiple players? It's in there. As the Switch has proven, the basic console hybrid idea is brilliant, but as with many of Sega's early schemes, the Nomad didn't quite pan out.

Feature | Kane & Lynch 2 is nasty, pointless, and well worth playing
Every dog has its day.
Kane & Lynch 2 is an ugly game in almost every sense. It's aesthetically ugly, it's thematically ugly, it's even mechanically ugly, a clumsy and chaotic third-person shooter with a sticky cover system and AI thicker than asbestos soup. What's interesting about it all, though, is that most of this ugliness (although admittedly not all of it) is deliberate, in what is a fascinating example of a developer exploring its own mistakes and mishaps through another creative work.

Digital Foundry | In Theory: Could Sony produce a PS4 Switch-style console hybrid?
To what extent is a current-gen handheld feasible?
Nintendo's Switch has carved out a sizeable share of the gaming market by offering something genuinely unique - a state-of-the-art handheld that also doubles up as a decent home console. Despite a spec disadvantage in terms of pure performance, it's been a genuine pleasure to chart the progress of the console. When we first saw it way back in January 2017, it was easy to dismiss it as a portable Wii U. Now we know it's much, much more - and its success begs the question: could Sony or Microsoft follow suit with console hybrids of their own?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider cost $75-$100m to make
That's a Lara dosh.
We know big triple-A video games cost a lot to make, but it's rare for a video game developer to put a figure - even a roundabout figure - on it. But that's exactly what Eidos Montreal, maker of the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider, has done.

Essential | Laser League review - an instant modern-day multiplayer classic
Major laser.
Forget the name, first off - it's the only foot developer roll7 really puts wrong in this, the latest from the team behind OlliOlli, and perhaps the studio's most ambitious project to date. Laser League invites awkward comparisons to Rocket League, and given how this is also a straightforward yet deceptively deep multiplayer experience, it's too easy to dwell on that. To make that assumption is to miss the point, though, and it sells what roll7's concocted here more than a little short.

Recommended | Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze re-review - an exceptional platformer that rivals Nintendo's best
King kong.
Poor old Donkey Kong. Despite having helped make Nintendo a key player in the world of video games in the 1981 arcade title bearing his own name, he's always been cast in Mario's shadow. I've often found it hard to fathom exactly why his character doesn't have quite the same appeal - it's a gorilla in a necktie, for heaven's sake! - but the apathy has snowballed over the years, so that when Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze came out some four years ago on the Wii U it was met in some quarters with little more than a shrug.

Norse and easy.
The year is 878AD and the Vikings have already invaded. A brief truce has now settled across the British Isles, but there's too much bad blood here for the Norsemen to coexist with those they've so recently conquered. This isn't peace, it's half-time.

Recommended | Forgotton Anne review - masterly storytelling in a fantastical world
You will remember this.
I wish I could just tell you that Forgotton Anne is brilliant and wrap things up there. I want to leave you to go enjoy it without saying anything else, because that's the way this story should be encountered. It's a game about a lack of knowledge - yours, and Anne's - and how this can be both a curse and a blessing. It's a game about forgetting things and about loss, about remembering what you had and the cost of doing so. Best of all, it's a game which will win you over with its huge amount of heart.

Digital Foundry | It looks like PS4 Parappa Remastered is the PSP game running under emulation
With a high-res texture pack.
Would you believe that the PlayStation 4 remaster of Parappa the Rapper is actually the PSP version running under emulation? That's the remarkable claim put forward by hackers using compromised PlayStation 4s to examine game code, first revealed by 'KiiWii' on the GBATemp forum (with a tip of the hat to Ars Technica for its write-up of the story so far). The actual remastering - such as it is - appears to come in the form of a high resolution texture pack that swaps out the original PSP assets for renditions more becoming of a current-gen system.
