  1. Sonic Forces review

    Review | Sonic Forces review

    Tails of the expected.

It's taken years of gruesome experimentation but Sonic Team's designers have finally pulled it off. They've created the Ur-Sidekick, the Sidekick of Sidekicks, a total embodiment of a wayward franchise that can be invested with the traits of every other noxious bit-part this universe has produced. The task at hand may be to run down Dr Eggman's latest henchman, Infinite, a preening, masked spectre who can mess with dimensions and resurrect old nemeses to fight you, but if you really want to stare into the abyss of time, to witness reality cracking and splintering under the eternal return of the same, look no further than the hyper-accessorised, player-crafted abomination at your side.

Feature | Meet the champion racing driver turned indie developer

    Can you handle a twin-stick?

Recent years have seen the rise of one particularly positive story; that of the gamer turned professional racing driver, as personified by Lucas Ordóñez, Jann Mardenborough or the eventual winner of McLaren's world's fastest gamer competition that's been running through the year. This one, though, is entirely new to me - it's about a bona fide racing driver turned game developer.

    And about time too.

A change is as good as a rest, so they say. In Infinity Ward's case, a change must have been absolutely essential for its own collective sanity, having worked solidly on World War II shooters for longer than can be strictly healthy.

  17. Assassin's Creed Origins: Xbox One X is improved, but to what extent?

Digital Foundry | Assassin's Creed Origins: Xbox One X is improved, but to what extent?

Impressive resolution boosts over PS4 Pro, but no game-changing improvements.

Assassin's Creed Origins arrives on Xbox One X, giving us a fascinating insight into how a key developer aims to scale their multi-platform projects most effectively across the current generation of consoles - both base models and 4K mid-gen refreshes. On the face of it, there are few surprises here: the more teraflops your console has, the better the resolution, automatically meaning that, yes, the game looks best on Xbox One X. But the techniques Ubisoft has deployed to scale its game across consoles produces some interesting results: Microsoft's new console hands in by far the best raw metrics in terms of pixel counts, but PS4 Pro still holds up rather well.

  22. How a hamster and a vacuum cleaner combined for Monster Hunter World's best new beast

I've got my own particular tale about a hamster and a vacuum cleaner, but it's probably for the best I don't share it here (I was eight years old, me and my friend were very stupid and it's not something I'd ever do again. The hamster lived, though). This tale's a bit more savoury, and it's about Monster Hunter World's best new beast.
